Tickets in hand for Hawaii in October.

So far I’ve never managed to be in the UK or Ireland when it’s rained. Granted, this is only my 5th trip and first to London, but still that adds up to over a month and not a single rainy day so far on my record. Despite having been once in November and once in October as well!

I have been to Finland once, decades ago. Had a wonderful time, got to Rovaniemi and Helsinki. I would love to go back and see the islands west of Turku.
In the summer time, the long winter nights are bad for me. Even NYC in December is too far north for me (for more than a few days).

The winter darkness is totally different when the whole landscape is filled with snow. It doesn't feel as dark at all.
Which is why I wouldn't want to live on the souther coast here, they don't have reliably snowy winters, and I find it unbearable.
Many tourists complain about the nightless nights at Rovaniemi and north of that - well, even in southern Finland though the sun does set. They have difficulties sleeping...

Living in Germany (6+ years), and later just south of Seattle (2 years) taught me that seasonal affective disorder is a harsh mistress.
The long days in the summer are easier to adapt to (the good Lord provided us with blackout curtains for a reason). A few days isn't terrible for me, but more than that takes a toll on my health.
Living in Hawai'i (about 5 years for me) had an entirely different weirdness, and not one you would notice on vacation. The shortest night and the longest night are so similar and the weather has so little seasonal variation that it is easy to lose track of the years. Sort of like the very deliberate timelessness of a casino, but for years rather than hours. If I had the right job offer, I might move back, but this time I would know what I was in for.

Off to Munich for a week. Then Berlin. Then to Paris. All travel in Europe will be by train. Should be really fun!

Re: beer in Munich. Giesinger Bräu was a great find when I was there. The beer house was small and quaint, full to the brim but people in a great mood, really nice atmosphere. And still, despite it being so full and busy, the barkeep found time to talk with a random tourist, ie. me, about their beers and Finnish beers and Wurst, and generally was just a really nice guy. He also gave me samples of pretty much all the beers there.
It was the best beer experience I had in Munich.

I went to the Klöster Andechs outside of Munich, Sunday before my meetings. It was a beautiful old abbey complex, and I had to walk up a gorgeous path theu a forest and up the hill to get there.
And the beer??? Super wow.

It's been almost 40 years, but my favorite beer in Munich was the Augustiner Bierkeller, not far from the Rathaus. Great food and amazing beer!
