it's like a nautical star tattoo. if a woman is a lesbian and she has one there's a chance she has it because she's a lesbian and she wants to display this to people with her tattoo. if she isn't a lesbian she probably just thinks stars are cool so she got a fucking star tattoo.

Ha! Never heard they were associated with lesbians.
Most of the people I know who have a nautical star are people who live/lived on yachts and sail extensively.
Both genders.
As for anklets - there used to be an association between which side and availability, but I think that's just with teenagers.

it's an old code from way back in the day when it was wise to keep your sexuality a secret that some still make use of just because, but not too many. if i remember correctly the tattoo went on a women's left wrist so it could easily be hidden under a watch or what have you when it needed to be. i have no idea how prevalent it actually was, but that doesn't really matter. most of these supposedly universal secret codes never were as prevalent as some would have you think but they did exist. the hankey code is my favorite 'cause it just seems so corny and overly complicated.

The latest trend is to wear a black ring on the right hand.
I associate anklets with California summers and Austin hippies. In other words, I've totally worn them.
