Whatever your status, you can wear one and when someone asks what it means, you can tell them whatever you like, based on your desire toward that person.

"Oh, a blue anklet on the left leg means I like oral sex in the laundry room after midnight."

From my memory they aren't anklets like one wears belly dancing, but thin chains often with letters or symbols hanging off them that give more info to preference.

There was a wannabe g/f I refer to as The Anklet because she was such a pain in the ass to be rid of, hence the image.
