Yay! I'm the first to point it out!
I loved that book, too, but I've always thought Wharton just had a way of telling things like they were. The novel saddened me a bit, but I enjoyed it all the same.
Oh...but it wasn't as depressing as Ethan Fromme, right? I love her writing but I hated that book. Talk about depressing.
