If they raise the minimum wage, tip %'s should go down

If anyone truly takes ONE minimum wage job with the desire that it will fund their family's lifestyle, then they are ignorant.

If a minimum wage job is the only job a person is able to get, then perhaps that person should look into one or more of the following:

1. Get more than one job....even at minimum wage......

2. Perhaps go to school....college or trade....and learn a skill that pays more in the workforce.

3. Perhaps have more than one person in the family working (this may require the mom at home during the day, the dad at home during the evening.....it might require some adjustments to schedules....but if it is a desire to take care of the family, things have to be done).

4. Sit back and do nothing......welfare will take care of the family.

To expect the amount being paid to a person in the form of minimum wage is going to be enough to fully fund a family is just ridiculous. Minimum wage jobs are there for people to have "extra" money or for those entering the work force with no job experience, thereby receiving it in those lower paying jobs.

If a person in a minimum wage job does not want to improve their money situation, then perhaps one other option would be to stop whining about it. There is not one single company, take a fast food for example, that could afford to pay it's workers $20/hour and NOT have it affect the prices of the food.

What will happen is that the people who purchase food from these places will stop doing that......then the companies will have less money to pay their employees,......then the companies will have to let employees go.....then the employee will have no money and be on welfare anyway.

Why not just let the individual person try and make their own way.....work more hours?.....get another job?......get training in a field which pays more?

It is NOT mandatory that ANY employee works in a minimum wage job. If the employee doesn't like it, then quit. If the employee wants to make more money, then DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!! Asking for more and more money by the employer will result in no jobs for anyone!
There aren't enough jobs to go around. Haven't you heard?

Nothing you just said matters. The fact is that a significant percentage of jobs are minimum wage or close to it, and there are more people wanting to work than there are jobs. That means that the option is for people to either work minimum wage or not work. Which option do you think they should go with?

Working a second job at minimum wage doesn't help much because it doesn't add much income - and the expense is rapid deterioration of parenting and family life. Families where the parents work a large number of hours end up being torn apart by divorce at an alarmingly high rate and the children suffer greatly from absent parenting.

Nothing you said about "just work a better job" matters either because it doesn't alter what jobs are available in the American economy. Employers don't just say "oh look, some people went to trade school, let's start offering better jobs for them".

There aren't enough jobs to go around. Haven't you heard?

It's part of the RW's paradox on jobs. They claim both things are true:

1) Under the Obama economy there aren't enough jobs and they are too often bad ones.

2) Everyone is free to have a job whenever they want it and have a better job whenever they want it. Therefore they can attack anyone receiving benefits while still somehow claiming #1 is true.

Logical consistency is not their strong suit.

Psst! The most accepted spelling is Cyprus. Just a heads up because kbate is gonna log in soon.

Aw shit, I'm dead. (I live near Cypress, Texas and spelling it that way is second nature to me).

I hope kbate enjoys her rare "victory" over me on this one.

No one pays me to grow veggies and fruit, but its a job, and I eat better than I might otherwise. At least I cant recall the last time I was sick.

I also raise flowers and ferns and shit. I don't get paid for it either. But it looks good and the critters like it.

Haha, you guys are posting in a Renard thread.

FWIW, waiters and bartenders do not usually earn minimum wage. They earn a lower rate, based on the expectation that they will be earning tips. IRS taxes those tips at the rate they expect people to make. (No idea what it is now, but when I was bartending back in the stone age, I think it was 9%. IIRC, it went up to 13% or 15% just after I left. But I'm sure Lit has at least one waiter or bartender who can chime in.)

Fuck, now I posted in a Renard thread.

I went full Renard.

While I'm at it, I'm fucking sick of the "Just take our survey online and we'll give you a free cookie next time you come in." That cookie is not free. Your time is a commodity, and so (more important) is your data. That cookie is nothing compared to the aggregate benefit to the company of the data you provide, and the loyalty channel you open up for them. Data companies charge mint, and you're giving them their supplies for free.

Do NOT fill those fucking things out. They are underpaying you by exponents.

You really make me laugh.........(especially the part about absent parenting and deterioration of parenting and family life. I am SURE that is the highest of priorities on your list......:D:D:D:rolleyes: )

As far as the other, your response to mine is what does not matter. You can say what you will about minimum paying jobs, those who work them, and that there are more people wanting to work than jobs (which I would completely argue, at least in my town....you should see the "Now Hiring" signs in the windows.......companies NEED workers....and people won't work.

The thing you really need to try and learn .......as I pointed out above.....if the minimum wage is raised......companies will raise prices......people won't purchase whatever the company is selling.....company will layoff or fire employees.

So, those employees will have no job anyway!!!

It goes back to personal responsibility. If a person wants a better life for their family, or even just themselves, if single, then that person is going to do whatever it takes to make a way for their family or selves.

It may require hard work, it may be frustrating, it may interfere with family, at times.....but the consequence of doing nothing is a person with no job, no money.....and dependent on the government for sustaining their life......(also demanding more from those actually working and paying taxes so they can have that "sustaining lifestyle" from the government.

How about stop trying to make excuses for the minimum wage earners. They should be THANKFUL they even HAVE a job, in this economy!! They need to do whatever it takes to take care of their family......and stop demanding more and more from those who have no more to give!!

Your superstition aside, it's really ruled by supply and demand.

Of course it is.

Some gold goes into jewelry, some goes into electronics. The rest goes into a box, where it sits and its owner hopes the price goes up, because no one pays interest on gold deposits.

Then one day, a rumor goes out about someone who has a lot of gold is going to sell some, and everybody opens their box and sells gold, because no one wants to get stuck with cheap gold. Now is the time to buy, because it has to go back up again. It just has too, because there is no way somebody would really sell their gold. Couldn't happen.

Some of this makes sense. Republicans are holding gold, which will only be good for them, if the economy tanks again. This explains their policies.

Exactly how many lying ascriptions are you going to make against me? Jesus is disappointed in you.

In reality I have a master's in social work with a focus on children and families. I worked for a few years in group homes, foster care, and as an in-home therapist with the goal of strengthening at-risk familes and keeping them together. And then when I stopped being a social worker I went on to run two family advocacy clinics which basically meant I was still a social worker. Concern for children and parents is of utmost professional as well as personal interest to me, so I'm sorry but you're going to need a new line of bogus attacks against me because you really flubbed this one. :)

It doesn't matter what's going on in your town because we're talking about the nation as a whole.

The thing you really need to try and learn .......as I pointed out above.....if the minimum wage is raised......companies will raise prices......people won't purchase whatever the company is selling.....company will layoff or fire employees.

Minimum wage has been raised many times on both the state and local level and prices have never spiked in reaction to it, nor has unemploment. So you need to explain why now is any different or admit you have no point at all. Or that you're thinking with your feelings again.

And on a personal level I agree with you. But we're talking about a macro-level and you can't just say that everyone should get a higher education because then low-paying jobs would magically vanish.

How about stop trying to make excuses for the minimum wage earners. They should be THANKFUL they even HAVE a job, in this economy!! They need to do whatever it takes to take care of their family......and stop demanding more and more from those who have no more to give!!

Earlier in this post you argued the notion that there are more workers than jobs and then a couple paragraphs later you say the economy is so bad that people should thank their lucky stars they have a job. How do you expect anyone to respond when you're arguing both positions at the same time?

Even if Cyrus sold every last ounce of its gold reserves it would effectively cause a 0% bump in global supply. A 0% increase in supply will not cause a 25% loss in value, genius.

You obviously have a very limited understanding of commodities trading day day....

1 well placed news article can wreck an entire market, "huge ____ reserve" found/sold off etc will most definitely and can have HUGE effects on the commodities market.

It's not all technical chart reading/forecasting....big human element to it.

So yes if Cypress sold off their reserve esp without doing it really discreetly it very well may have a huge impact esp short term.

I gotta ask....the 0952048573249587349857 times we have raised min wage it has done piss all of nothing, bottom feeders are still sucking at 7.50 the same as they were at 5.25 and 4 and 350....on and on and on...

What do you think a min wage increase right now would do?

Buy an extra 30 pack of keys at the end of the week...that's about it, ohh fuckin rah.

Okay well Cypriss didn't sell its reserve and says it will not sell it.

And if one article can cause gold to flip into an ultra-bear market it seems not so much like the stable investment it's billed as.

A minimum wage increase would reduce or eliminate a lot of need for SNAP, WIC, HUD, and Medicaid resources. And for the record I don't think we should keep upping it every few years, I think we need to set it at something minimally livable and then tie it to inflation or cost of living and be done with it.

IDK I don't fuck with Gold so I don't do any homework on it...I'm just saying news and even rumors can and do effect markets, sometimes in a minor way that only throws it for a hiccup for a day or two, sometimes it can send the value of something into a tail spin or a bearish trend into a bullish one, esp in commodities where things aren't nearly as technically based as say....stocks or currency exchange markets seem to be but even they are subject to fundamental forces as well.

That's why most (not all as some a pure technical junkies) watch/read just as much news as they do looking over charts.

Negative....it's clearly spelled Cypress.....

I believe she has everyone on the board on ignore except Byron and AJ. It's nothing short of a miracle, then, when she responds directly to my threads time after time. She always has some sort of wonderful explanation as to how that can occur. I'm thinking she's psychic or something.

Pretty sure I never managed to get on the ignore list. I'm only on a few.

Doc, why do you keep trying to preach sense to these people? Just out of curiosity?

Because there are lots of people, more than you think who don't have their minds made up or aren't as knowledgeable about the facts. It's not about changing minds, quite often it's about making the other side look stupid.

Look at it this way, if you were either undecided or completely clueless on any given subject and you came here and read Rob and Merc and other other side Vette and Koala which side would you think was right, and which side has integrity?

I'd go with Rob/Merc for both being right and having integrity, but then I'm not a disinterested observer here....;)

Werd...except I'm on most iggy list.

And I'll give it to merc...but Rob can, has and will again be just as childish, pig headed and asinine as the RWJC. He's like KB's left wing doppelganger. Usually over the same hot button issues too...borderline hystarical partisan hacks all of them, to them their party is right before the issue is even mentioned, and could NEVER do any wrong and nothing anyone could ever say nor any evidence/proof of wrong doing EVER be sufficient enough to change their minds about it either.

IDK I just figured you would have gone with a slightly more level headed/not so " (D) = GOD, OBEY!" narrow example of a GB lib.
