"We have met the enemy, and they are ours," was one of Oliver Perry's two famous statements at the Battle of Lake Erie in the War of 1812. Walt Kelly, the famous American cartoonist, featured his strangely philosophical characters as denizens of the Okefenokee Swamp in Georgia. Pogo, the Opossum, was the primary character, and he is noted for that insightful turn of Perry's observation. The American cartoonist still hold their annual convention in Kelly's town of Waycross, just outside the swamp. And if you get there, there a fantastic barbeques restaurant you should visit.
