one of the things I love about my adoptive homeland is how so much of what happens in Westminster is a cross between Monty Python and Yes Minister.Nerd thing 2: this is why the current Leader of the Opposition, Sir Keir Starmer, assumed the role with no difficulties, while Alec Douglas-Home, PM from 1963-64, had to renounce his earldom in order to become the PM, as no noble is allowed in the House of Commons. He had to get his own Commons seat too, so for a few weeks the Prime Minister was in neither House of Parliament.
