Do you bother to try to keep your children from seeing immoral things on the internet?

If I was a parent I wouldn't know how to approach this issue. I would keep cable TV out of the home and forbid bad music, but what can you do about the internet? They have to use it for school and learning. Everyone knows parental controls are a complete sham.

Does the modern parent simply not care? It doesn't even seem to be an issue in the public discussion anymore.

What happens when you isolate them culturally?

The only value we have left if that of the acceptance of the lowest common denominator as the new normative...

you create naive little lambs, ready for slaughter.

other kids bring film clips into schools & parks on their smart phones. unless you lock them in their rooms then they could easily be exposed to porn or gore. you've just got to be open and honest with them and make sure they're prepared for whatever they may encounter.

far better to control the doses and explain the issues.

More importantly, the internet needs protection from children.

How do you think The Wiggles and other monsters develop?

I was denied porn as a child and now I'm a chronic masturbater.

Parents, don't let your children grow up to be chronic masturbaters.

I care. I shield them from much, but never the practical side of life - which would be near impossible on a farm.

The internet is not yet a concern for me as my oldest HATES anything to do with being inside and confined to looking at a screen. When he gets old enough that it's a necessity, I hope I've educated him well enough to know where the perils lie.

It is a concern because even when you try to monitor it things happen. The teacher at school shows them a you tube video of some musician and they want to see it again. They go on You tube searching around and see something they shouldn't. It's scary. We just keep the dialoque open. The thing is that I have told the kids they could ask me anything. If I didn't know the answer I would try to find it out. Let me tell you that can be some crazy stuff.

Yep, was my approach to the matter too.
And I looked over their shoulder once in a while when they were surfing...
The time they could spend on the net was limited to half an hour, although they could get more time allowed if they did more chores as they had to do.

The only answer is to begin a crusade against the internet and start sawing down the telephone poles, destroying cell towers and burning and smashing computers where ever you encounter one. Destroy your TV, smash your radio, burn your books (not the good ones like the bible or charles dickens but all of those horrible ones by minions of Satan (Stephen King that is).

Then trust in God and pray pray pray.

This was exactly the story one of the moms from my mommy group told. Boys alone were posting and watching videos of bike jumping and ended up with some nasty beastie clip.

I didn't relish being in her shoes trying to explain that kinda crap.

Well I'm also amazed at the positive side of the computer and media. My son's had an amazing conversation about the Holocaust the other night. They were learning about it in school but could explore information on the internet. I'm old enough to remember having to stand in line and wait for the only encyclepedia the school had. It's a give and take.

Immoral things? Like what, materialism and bigotry?

Or teh ghey and teh pr0n?

Kids cannot be protected from life......the internet is part of life. They are ALL going to see "something", eventually, which my not have been exposed to them before. This is no different than magazines, years ago or television these days.

The hope is that the years of spending time with them and teaching them (hopefully) right/wrong, respect, caring, love, etc....will be enough to counteract the things they will be exposed to. It is not just the sex stuff on the internet......there are plenty (especially on youtube) of things with kids (or adults) just being mean, disrespectful, out of control, etc.

It is really about the character of the parents and the children in their home. They learn their values there.
