I couldn't find the movie thread, so I'll post this here.

I was STUNNED by the documentary movie, "They Shall Not Grow Old" made by Peter Jackson. It is amazing what a larger budget for a documentary can produce. I went to see it on back-to-back days because it was that good.

Few attended, so I assume it won't be in theaters very long, but if you DO have a chance to see it, and historical documentaries interest you, I highly recommend it. Theater showings (versus when it is released digitally) includes an additional 30-minutes of behind the scenes footage narrated by Jackson on how they made the 100-year old film footage look so modern and new.

Simply amazing.

Oh I quite agree! And seeing it in the theatre in 3D gave one the feeling of experiencing it all along with the men who were narrating the actual footage.
No more grainy, speeded up old black and white footage like you’ve seen countless times before. No talking head “ experts” either, just the voices of the men ( boys) who were there. All that blood was shed, and they still got no respect when they returned home. Sounds familiar.

We want to feel safe, we want to think we are better than the darkness that lurks on the edges, we fear that we aren't and we forget that to be able to achieve being safe, and being better someone has to sacrifice their ability to be either. Where many fail is that they don't respect that sacrifice because they don't understand that someone has to do the things so other don't.

Despite my age and (relative) wisdom, I still wonder if there isn't some way societies and nations can learn to equitably resolve their disputes, without armed conflict. It is such a drain on the human potential.

There is, but it requires more inter-connectivity than we have I think. I'm a fan of countries just turning the Olympics into a competition who on who gets to run things for a few years.
