Loving wives: From violence to murder-suicide

This example is extreme, of course, but I would say that there would be many cases somewhere in between the Superman example and this example. It's not clear what is the right thing to do and it's certainly not universal, IMO.

I don't think this example is particularly extreme or difficult. As soon as you establish the decider as a cop, the rules of engagement are clear.

a) De-escalate the situation, if possible.
b) Incapacitate the mother, if possible.
c) But if either a or b are in any way risky, you absolutely take a lethal shot.

The point is that when the confrontation is happening both people are free citizens and, as a police officer, you don't get to decide that some citizens are more worthy than others. It might be emotionally painful, assuming you know every detail of the case, but a police officer's job is absolutely not to try and fix the flaws in the other part of the justice system. Things like double jeopardy laws exist for a reason and the whole line about it's better to let ten guilty men go free than hang an innocent one still hold true, even when you are confronted with one of those free guilty men.

Make the scenario even more extreme. The rapist/murderer is found guilty and is being escorted to the electric chair. The mother decides she wants to kill him herself and sneaks into the execution with a gun. Five minutes before the scheduled time, she pulls the gun on him as he's being escorted into the room. As a police officer what do you do? I'd argue exactly the same thing as above.

The point about tradiional superheroes, as others have said, is that they always find a way to resolve the situation without killing. Not realistic, but part of the healthy fantasy.

That is sufficient for a cop who is an android but I don't think it's enough for actual people. You are of course right about what the rulebook says in these situations but I was much more interested in the moral aspect of a cop who gets in such a situation. For me personally, the rulebook would never be enough and I would never be able to exclude my own morality from the equation. I would do what I think is right, or the least wrong in this case, rulebook be damned. That is likely why I wouldn't be much of a cop.

I've observed that the longer someone writes stories here the more they move toward "more"--more extreme fetishes, more extremely applied. I've definitely seen/experienced it in my own writing. I think that's in search of the "big arousal," with what has been written so far becoming too tame, so the ante is upped and new, more extreme, fetishes and actions are explored. If this, in fact, happens with long-term writers here, I wonder if it isn't also observable in the lengthening story file here as well.
I guess that concept of "more" would explain my observation.

As I encounter very few original storylines in LW - most are sequels or rehashed stories - the authors probably feel the need to do something to stand out. So the women get dumbed down into obliviousness ("I don't understand why you don't let me become a gangbang whore?"), the men get more and more righteous ("I earned all the money, I did all the household chores, I raised the kids, ... I did everything all by myself without anyone ever helping me", and the punishment of the cheaters becomes more extreme as well. Add to this that many seem to admire the lone wolf-martyr type of man (see Donald Trump and his followers) and there you go:Murder, suicide and murder-suicide are the logical outcome of that. Whether they get sexual or psychological gratification out of this is, in my opinion, unclear.

The question remains whether they get a sexual or psychological gratification out of reading such a story.

I think the OP was calling out a clear and worrying gobal trend. Only a fool or mentally anaethestized person caouln't sense the rise of Mars

In all honesty, I like to tell myself that this is, in small part, a reflection of reality as well. I mean, during the last decade, the number of households with a single mother stayed pretty much the same, while the number of households with a single father almost doubled. At least according to Statista.

And it kinda makes sense to me when I see how women today are discouraged from being stay-at-home moms instead of pursuing a career as aggressively as possible. Mostly because a single income is simply no longer enough to sustain a family, of course, but also because it is often frowned upon today. Consequently, the number of fathers who turn into the primary caregiver while also earning money is rising significantly. And the number of mothers who are deemed unfit is rising at the same time.

Though, the extremes to which those BTB stories take these themes are often ridiculous. There's no talking around that.

I think the problem is you are reading the wrong stories or only focusing on those types of stories you described. And when you read the comments, you might have selective memory noticing the negative ones.

There are plenty of other, more sex-positive stories in LW. But if you select your stories to read based on the ratings by others, then you'll find the trend you describe. That doesn't mean those are the only ones there, just that those types get higher ratings there.

Try reading instead those stories rated from 2.0 to 3.0 or up to 3.5. That's where you'll find my fun swinger, sharing stories.

Yes, I'm a shitty writer, and you'll find writing errors, particularly in my earlier stories. And there are plenty of others, some better written but equally low-rated in that category.

In February, I wrote thirteen 750-word stories as an experiment into the psych of the LW audience. With all of them being written by me, they are equally shitty in writing style, so it eliminates qualitative differences. The ratings then reflect the audience acceptance of the couples' situations.

The lowest rated at 2.13 with 650 votes is "Pavlov's Dog - 750 Words" in which the wife is using blowjobs as a reward for her husband to accept her infidelity. Rated at 3.47 with 3.59 votes is "The Final Solution - 750 Words" (poor choice of title on my part), in which an impotent husband finds the solution for his horny wife. And there are others, like one where the husband is mentally incapable of seeing his wife with another man, with her lovers being invisible in his mind.

So, perhaps you should try changing you criteria for the stories you select to read, and you find the world there has more to offer.

One of my 750 word stories relates that position in "Quiet, Don't Wake Him" with the husband losing all feelings for his indifferent wife over the years as he struggled to work and maintain a family life. It's rated at 3.8 in LW with 1,491 votes! And it isn't a violent story.

So, I think the various reactions on my 750-word story experiment points toward the majority of LW readers as NOT being violent, but more judging of the husband-wife dynamics, hating infidelity and preferring monogamy.

EDIT: I created a "series" in my list of stories, for 12 of those I posted in February. I left out the squirrel story.

The rating is not one of the criteria I use to decide which stories I read. But swinger or sharing stories are definitely not for me. The mere thought of sharing my wife with anyone makes my dick shrivel. But that is my problem, not yours. You write what you want and how you want and I sincerely hope you enjoy yourself doing it!

The same goes, to some extent at least, for those people writing the revenge murder/suicide stories. They are, hopefully, just stories. I was mostly commenting on the observed trend of increasing violence. A trend which others not only don't see, but even perceive it in the opposite way. Which may be the true situation. I haven't made a detailed study.

I look for different things in different categories. In LW I'm looking for insights into people. I don't really care whether it's a reconciliation or divorce story as long as the thoughts of the characters are consistent and somewhat realistic.

So, you are focused on stories of infidelity and how they are resolved, which I find difficult to read. I rate most of those BTB stories a 3, with violent ones a 2 and the "just divorce" a 4.

Since you're seeking those types of stories, try tracking and quantifying the stories you read. Create some subdivisions; husband cheating versus wife cheating, and where they end in divorce or reconciliation. Then in those splitting from the marriage, rate the levels of violence from 1-10 with 1 being an equitable/friendly divorce and 10 an extreme violent BTB.

Give us some quantitative feedback on a hundred stories, on how the trend is evolving, and whether it's a real trend or a subjective opinion.

I started this thread because I have absolutely no intention of doing that 😂 A couple of other opinions would be totally sufficient for me to confirm or reject my observation. 😉

Personally, I read LW for the catharsis. What I look for in LW stories is not sex, but a person being betrayed (or doing the betrayal) and dealing with the consequences.

George Martin once wrote that the only thing worth writing about is “the human heart in conflict with itself”, and while I think that is meant to be hyperbolic, those are the stories I enjoy the most. What drives a spouse who considers themselves a good person to cheat? Can the wronged spouse forgive and forget, or how do they move on? A clever revenge story can be fun too, but that is almost a different genre.

The premise can be ridiculous, what matters to me are the emotions and how the characters react. There is a story, dont remember the name or the author, where a brilliant scientist manages to cure a rare sickness that the MC’s brother is currently suffering, but to do so she has sex with a colleague as that has always worked when she was stuck before, and her husband is not available at the time for plot reasons. The premise is not that realistic, but what matters to me is the development of the characters. Is it worth it to cure an illness if you must cheat to do it? Should you forgive your unfaithful wife if she did it to save your brother? How do you deal with the family pressure if you do so? I think the story is called “For the greater good”, but its been a while, and I feel I might be mixing two different but similar stories.

That is just one story of hundreds, but it is the first that comes to mind right now and it is a good example. LW is probably the only place in the internet where these kinds of stories are provided in a semidaily basis for free. At least it is the only place that I know of. I assume there are many people like me out there.

The original was For the Greater Good by imhapless, and he invited others to finish the story. Several folks did, including a number of the regulars in LW at the time.

The jury was made up entirely of women, and the murderer could be released after only 5 years... Only in Texas.
