The next couple of days seemed to settle into a dull routine of sorts. Save for the changing of the guards bringing food with them, things were a bit stifling. Except for the sex. She and Todd tried to be quiet when they made love but there were times when the passion of the moment would overtake her and between that and Todd’s grunts, made sure that whichever policeman was standing guard over them knew just what was happening behind the flimsy door to the bedroom.
Apparently all the policemen had been warned by Trevor not to ask her to make even a cup of coffee as each one just automatically did it themselves. Which was really fine with her. She never really was the homemaker type.
Pizza was the food of the day. She had been asked the day before what was her favorite combination and she told them. Mushroom and extra cheese. She had seen the rolling of the officer’s eyes and some smart alecky mumble about vegan. She was tempted to remind him that she wasn’t a vegetarian at all. She had eaten the MacDonald’s burger that he brought her the day before. It was just that she really didn’t like meat on her pizza.
But when Carl, the officer of the day, arrived carrying a huge pizza box, she was suddenly hungry and ready to eat. Opening the box showed her that half of it had those wonderful slices of fungi and she grabbed plates for them all.
Carl munched on a slice that looked as if it was covered in meat while Todd teased her about the mushrooms. Carl’s gun was on the table beside him. They all sat and joked and it was relatively easy and light.
Then all hell broke loose. There was a loud crash and Helen screamed as they all three jumped up. Todd grabbed her and shoved her behind him, putting himself between her and whoever it was coming through the door. She heard gun fire and fighting and suddenly she was knocked backwards and felt pain as she hit her head on something.
Then her world went black.
