Ask Me One Thing About Las Vegas

Why did those gangster assholes plop in the middle of the fucking desert instead of some place hospitable?

The mob only took interest in Vegas as it started to grow, Vegas was mainly built to accommodate the railroad which was built between LA and Salt Lake City, Vegas was chosen as a kind of halfway point to build a depot. The original depot was built on the ground where the Plaza sits today. The mob started to take over when casino hotels were being built on Highway 91 or The Strip as it's known today.

Rose. Rabbit. Lie. (at the Cosmopolitan) is so amazing!!

You know I haven't been there yet. I've heard it is fab though. I'm bumping it up my To Go List because you say so FC!

Yep! Somethin sexy. Absolutely no interest in Donny & Marie type shit!

Well, sadly most of the shows are either still closed or have already announced that they have permanently closed (so that the performers can find new gigs).

So until more of them re-open, I would have to say anywhere like the Sahara that still has showgirls mingling in the crowd. After that, I would probably say Circa downtown would be worth checking out. They're opening next month (Oct) and they are a 21+ resort (no kids or families allowed on premise). Everyone is feeling like it's going to be pretty special. :D

Hiya Liz.

We all hear about that one famous quote ' what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas'

I realize everyone is different on what that means to them. Some people, it means nothing.

In your opinion, how often do you think more conservative type people really cut loose in Vegas?

A LOT!

And I know because my job is in guest relations, specifically VIP guest relations. They have the wildest parties you can imagine. Especially the affluent, not quite "over the hill", super uptight types who want to "feel young one more time" or "do something wild and crazy" one more time before they get too old.

Seriously. All the time. Every single resort :)

Thank you Liz! Luck favors the prepared.

Hope you get lucky the next time you visit GP! ;) :)

Do you ever feel you're getting too old for Las Vegas?

I'm going to go ahead and assume that question is not meant for me in the way that is pricking a sore spot so I will answer it in two ways:

a) No, I am not getting too old for Las Vegas. My tastes are just changing and becoming more refined. I enjoy fine dining and good shows more than I once did but I will still double-down when I'm on a hot streak and I had sex on the roof of our resort two years ago so no, I am NOT getting too old for Las Vegas.

b) If this is more of a rhetorical question in regards to the general public, again, I think no. The demographics might look like we're skewing ever younger and younger and towards families, but the biggest spend rates were still largely coming from the 50+ crowd pre-Covid. Because of all the price slashing, a younger, more value-hunting crowd is prowling the Strip now but I suspect that is going to change and evolve back towards the luxury crowd in the coming months.

I hope anyways :)

The Union Pacific put Vegas on the map but it was the Prohibition Era that was great for Vegas. (it didn't catch-on here lol) Then we had all the jobs for the Hoover Dam during the Depression. Then the relief and celebratory mood after World War II. Then Elvis. There were lots of reasons, not just one actually.

Never too old for Vegas

True! :D

I’m craving a Vegas visit again...Last time was 2017...I love going in November or December the best because of the cooler weather...

Hi Liz,

Genuine question - best place to stay for first-timers wanting to enjoy the place and not get ripped off or robbed!! (Aussie couple in our early 50s.....)

That is usually a great time of year here Cashmere. Most people tend to dress a little nicer then too and there's generally fewer kids yammering at their parents because they're bored.

Hey Beautiful,

That's actually a tougher than you might think question. Not about getting robbed - unless you're really on a budget and stay at some cheap motel off the Strip or one of the "value" motels north of the Wynn. All the better resorts have pretty extensive security and are generally very safe.

Personally, I love the elegance, the spas and the restaurant options at the Bellagio, Venetian, and Wynn the most. Mandalay Bay in the non-summer months is nice too. But the rooms at these (and other similar places) can be expensive ($300+/night) and so you might feel "ripped off" just because of the high prices.

The Cosmopolitan is fun, but it generally attracts a clubgoer crowd in their 20's and 30's. Caesar's is centrally located and usually a bit less expensive than the other places I mentioned. Spring for a room on one of the upper floors though for the best views. If you're looking for sort of a unique place with lots of in-house attractions the Luxor might be another good option for you.

The newly re-modeled and rebranded Virgin Hotel Towers (the old Hard Rock which was waaay cool imho because of all the rock memorabilia everywhere!) is re-opening later this month and I expect it will be high on my list too after I get a chance to see what they've done.

If you're on a budget and you're looking for the best old-Vegas, tacky but fun, good table odds, "bang for your buck" the best options imho are: the Tropicana (I adore the way their pool is laid out!) or the Westgate (the old Hilton where Elvis lived and performed)

Hope this helps!

A lot of things happened to Vegas and the history is a fantastic read and an insight in to what a great place it is. The Mob Museum is a great place to visit and tells an amazing story, how does a lawyer who defended the mob end up as the mayor, only in Vegas.

How is Vegas coping with all this that is going on? Normally I would there around this time of year. Not looking like I will get there till next year.

We're scraping by. Business is coming back slowly. With all the big conventions on hold for the foreseeable future though things are probably going to remain pretty tight.

On the plus side though:
it's a lot easier to get around.
Room prices are waaaay down.
And two more hotels have opened!
- Both are adults only and one is entirely non-smoking! :D

Liz, I wanted to know what it is like in Las Vegas as far as living goes? The wife and I have been there together many times as it is a short car ride from Southern California but it has been primarily to party on the strip. We haven’t gone off of the strip so much. We’ve have both been seriously considering a move out of California recently for something less expensive but at the same time nice and spacious. Some other places we’ve been considering are Phoenix and San Antonio and some part of the Midwest. What are some areas which are nice and some others that should be avoided in or around the Las Vegas area? What’s it like living there overall? I work in the electrical field so I’m not too worried about finding employment because there’s always plenty of work anywhere in the country.

I know Vegas depends on its Tourism to thrive...Just how bad is it there right now? I can only imagine...I know someone that is moving from Vegas soon...She was a housekeeper in 2 different hotels there and is having a hard time with employment...sadly...

Have you heard anything about Circa? Is it special enough to pay about three times what another Downtown hotel would cost, or should I stay at the D and get passes for the Circa pool?

Hi Liz, I was told that many of the lakes and rivers are just about dry down there, and they may never reach their old levels again. If this is ,in fact, true, isn't it just a matter of time before the entire area becomes untenable as a 'city' to live in?

Let me start by saying when In Vegas, it’s business. I haven’t been to Vegas for fun since i was a kid In the 70’s. We had family there and visited a couple of times. So take my suggestions with a grain of salt.

My company puts us up in the run of the mill hotels (Hiltons, Embassy’s, Renaissance) but has sprung for one of the resorts when rooms are scarce due to some big event. We have limited time so one of my favorites is the HoffbrauHause on Paradise Rd. I like it because I like German food (lived in Berlin and Munich), have been to the real one in Germany and it’s just fun. There are five or six across the US, I’ve visited three. The Vegas HB can be a little touristy though. The beer and food are great! There are also other places right around it.

OK Dr. Liz. Question. Can you get me U2 tix when they open the MSG Sphere? I soooooo want to go! 😇

What is the best strip club to take the kids to next month (18-21 in ages)?

I'm pretty sure you have to be 21 or over to get into a strip club.
