Budget Cuts

It seems the budget cuts might have played a role in the shuttle disaster. In 7 years, they have cut thousands of workers and reduced the amount of safety inspectors and training for contingencies.

And with a ballooning U.S. deficit, it looks like the space program, the manned space program, is probably going to be sacrificed.

There are many in the Bush administration now that have the long knives out. Insiders all day have been saying that this is probably what is needed to cancel high profile projects like going back to the moon and the Mars program. A few have said, the only space program should be weather satellites, spy satellites and Strategic Defence Initiative programs.

The Powell Speech and Off To War

Hey folks,

Well, we've heard the Powell speech and the follow-up in the days after. While it was compelling, it still didn't affirm the need to go to war. Even General Schwarzkopf this weekend said that he believed the U.S. was too certain that all they had to do was bomb and then clean up the pieces and build the country in an Amercan image afterwards.

It is probably true that once the U.S. attacks, they will win, but to what end? It sounds like an occupation would be necessary to re-build for years. Plus, the Shiites and Kurds would want to separate from Iraq if given the opportunity.

All of this comes with years of committment, billions of dollars and lost lives on both sides. No one knows what the reaction of the Arab community will be over a long term occupation of Iraq, not to mention the oil fields.

Meanwhile, the world is burning all over. The threat of al Qaeda has risen to higher level. India and Pakistan are nearing a nuclear war and North Korea is doing exactly what Iraq is doing except on a wider and far more dangerous scale. The North Koreans have threatened war against the U.S. and Bush just shrugs.

It is clear that Iraq is trouble. Keep the boot heel firmly planted over his throat but there is a crisis in several other places. If the U.S. acts like an imperial power, it will find that numerous countries will bristle against it.

Lastly, while all this is going on, the Bush government puts forward a budget that will raise the deficit to $300 billion this year and next and for a long time to come. They give tax cuts that for the average American will lower their taxes by around $100 to $300. For people in the top 1 % population, it is a tax break of an average of $150,000.

And for this, we get a $300 billion deficit? You don't cut taxes if you don't cut government. The Republicans know that and they hammered past Democratic governments to not run a deficit. Say what you will about the Clinton government, they didn't run a deficit. But now Republicans are saying that is okay to borrow money now and for the future to pay for tax cuts. How can that makes sense?

For people that don't believe that a strong Bush supporter has doubts about the war, here is the article:

BBC News

Former US Gulf War commander Norman Schwarzkopf has said a new war with Iraq has not yet been justified.

The thought of Saddam Hussein with a sophisticated nuclear capability is a frightening thought

General Schwarzkopf, who became known as "Stormin' Norman" during the 1991 Gulf War, called for United Nations weapons inspectors to be given more time to assess whether Iraq had any illegal weapons.

"I think it is very important for us to wait and see what the inspectors come up with, and hopefully they come up with something conclusive," he said in an interview with the Washington Post.

Interviewed at his home in Tampa, Florida, the 68-year-old retired general said he would like "better information" before he supported an invasion of Iraq.

"The thought of Saddam Hussein with a sophisticated nuclear capability is a frightening thought," he said.

"Now, having said that, I don't know what intelligence the US Government has."

US President George Bush, speaking in his annual State of the Union address late on Tuesday, said he would present fresh evidence to the UN next week about Iraq's weapons programme.

General Schwarzkopf praised his former comrade-in-arms, US Secretary of State Colin Powell, but said he was "somewhat nervous" about comments made by the Defence Secretary, Donald Rumsfeld.

"When he makes his comments, it appears that he disregards the Army," he was quoted as saying.

"He gives the perception when he's on TV that he is the guy driving the train and everybody else better fall in line behind him - or else."

General Schwarzkopf led US troops to victory in a UN-sanctioned allied military operation that followed Iraq's 1990 invasion of Kuwait.

He served under President George Bush senior. At the time, Colin Powell was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and current Vice President Dick Cheney was defence secretary.

He remains close to the Bush family and campaigned in Florida with Mr Cheney during the 2000 presidential election, the Washington Post said.

I think we all understand that you dislike the government officials in charge of the US at the moment. It is your opinion and you are entitled to it.

As an American I have to stand by the person voted into the office. Does it mean I agree with everything he is doing, no. It is the saying by the people for the people which means the majority of us voted for him. There are many things that citizens are not privy to but we can only put faith that he is doing whatever for the best interest of my nation. I emphathize that it is not an easy job being the President of the U.S. It is not a job that I would go after or want. Too many lives a person is responsible for.

The whole going to war thing has most of us on edge. I am not even talking just the U.S. Most of us do not realize or acknowledge that there has been fighting over in the Middle East since after the World Trade Center. Things that most of us do not take into account and go about our everyday living. Without the military doing their thing most of us would not be able to enjoy what we have. They have made sacrifices for my freedom and again I am grateful from the bottom of my heart.

Now adding Sadam Hussain into the mix only adds to heighten worry and politics. The people of Kuwaitt know how evil a man he is. From what I remember from desert storm he was playing about with chemical stuff back then. I have no doubt in my mind that he is continuing producing such weapons and helping Bin Landin. (IMO) We, the US, have become more of a common cause for Sadamm and Bin Ladin to join together as well as other Middle Eastern countries.

So if we go to war will our lives change. I would assume yes. NY has already heighten security even more for terriorist retaliation. My freedom is being taken away slowly however I hope it is just a temporary thing during these times. It is something I will abide by as long as others and my safety are involved. In a way UK had to adapt such practices in the past because of terrorism attacks on your country from the IRA and such. Like in WWII I hope that people realize the sacrifices we need to make in order to maintain our rights without complaining about it.

Last year when this all happened I thought about being in the UK and some of the measures that were in play. I could relate from experience now on the transition. It is not something you can ever get used to but at the same time you have to. I have to keep going on with my every day life without fear. If I can't then I have allowed the terrorists to win.

Another country to be concerned about is Korea. Again so much out there that we cannot comprehend. I just hope that a peaceful solution can happen quickly. If we do go to war I pray that we do not fuck ourselves with destroying this world.

The human race is on egg shells at this moment waiting to see what will take place next. I support my President again for the reason that the majority of citizens voted him in. He is doing the best job he can dealing with challenging situation.

Peace,
Tulip

Do you not see how absurd this is? Not only did a minority of Americans vote for George W. Bush(25%?) but he didn't even get the most votes of anyone running for president.

Your ignorance of those two things invalidates the rest of that post.

Today's word is: plurality

Exactly, Al Gore received a plurality of the American people's popular vote. A historical fact that Bush supporter would like to revise.

We, the American people, didn't vote that clown into office. But, now that he's been installed by the Supreme court, we'll just have to make the best of it and try to enjoy the recession, increase terrorism, and the $1,000,000,000,000.00+ deficit that goes along with having a republican autocrat for a President. Not to mention that we regular working Americans are being asked to sacrifice the lives of our sons and daughters in a war to line the pockets of Bush's rich oil and defense contracting butt-buddies, whose own children will never lift a finger in defense of this country.

Interesting thing conveyed on the Sunday news rounds---initially the baby boomers decided to balance the budget because they felt guilty about the imminent failure of Social Security and Medicare.

Now with the upcoming $5trillion debt---as a younger american-- I'll have to pay down that debt and receive no retirement benefits, despite the fact that I am paying for the baby boomers' package. Double whammy.

I recognise the GOP wants to kill Medicare and Social Security ASAP but giving the money to the top 1% doesn't seem like the best avenue. Why not give it to all those that have payroll taxes?

Tulip, although you write thoughful posts it's this consept I find difficult to understand.

Why do you have to stand by the person in office? I assume you're not a zombie, that you have thoughts of your own that you want to tell people about, so why all this misplaced loyalty?

Protests and dissent are the right of all people everywhere, whether that right can be exercised depends entirely on where you live.

America, 'Land of the Free', is constantly telling the rest of us that you have this right, so why do you feel the way you do?

I am not denying the right of others to stand up for themselves. I would assume that you follow along with your government policies. Right now Americans need to be unified and not against the other on this issue. I do not believe in war but at the same time after seeing the WTC fall I want revenge. I am human. Is this worth a war, NO. My opinion is it opened up a can of worms of others out there that have been plotting against something bigger. Example is North Korea and Sadam Hussain.

My country is based on rebels. Within the structure of my government the founding fathers mentioned the right to revolt against the government if it strays away from the beginnings. (something to that affect and another reason we the citizens have the right to bare arms)

Has Bush done anything as of yet to stray? How I see it is that he is trying to protect. I am sure there are other monetary reasons and such that we are not privy to. On a personal note a friend today mentioned how old looking he has gotten since this all started. To me that is a sign that it is weighing heavy on his shoulders. Again it is something I would not want to be personally involved with. So all I can do is to support his actions.

Does the economy suck right now? It sure does. Economy always suffer during a war or a threat of one. Jobs right now are limited because too many people are afraid in expanding and what not. Too many uncertaintities in the world.

I have several people related to me that have been fighting or just recently sent over to the Middle East. I refuse to buy into the fact that they are fighting for nothing. Each one of them have choosen to be part of the military and have taken up their chance to make a difference in the world. Would I want to see any of them harmed or killed. You all know my asnwer is a NO. War is never easy and it offers a high price with lives.

Too many of us civilians forget what it is about. The way I see it is that Sadam Hussain is a crazy man for investing time in chemical war far. Many Middle Eastern countries are anti American. For that fact so are people like you. If the small pox or another disease is let loose on the world it will call devastation. If there is a bomb set off by them then what?

I do not think it is about the oil anymore but something far worse than we can imagine. Bin Laddin is not a leader of a set government but he is a leader of an organization. A finatical one at that. His purpose is to fight for a way of life in his interpretation of religion. In doing so he is able to rally the support of others within the middle east. Again their hatred towards the US becomes a common ground where they can unite.

I am not writing this to convince anybody to change their mind. I am simply expressing the way I see it. I am not asking you to agree or disagree. I do know I need to keep my mind open so that I can interpret others view points fairly.

PP thanks for the kind words. I know as you do that this is nothing personal but it is a debate on how we view two sides of the coin. Nothing wrong in seeing that. It is amazing how other countries are skeptical in joining. They have every right to be. Jeez America stood back during WWII until Pearl Harbor. Again I hope that this thing is over with soon with little blood shed and such. I do worry for the people I know placed on the lines. God Bless and Watch over them!

We are on a fine line of mass destruction of the human race if we are not careful with the decisions we make. Let's face it if it was up to me I would have all of the leaders in one big room fucking each other. Whoever cums first wins, but ahhhh that is not how the real world works.

Peace,
Tulip

The U.N. Speeches

Hey folks,

Long speeches in the U.N. today. Hans Blix certainly laid it on the line and there was no smoking gun. He urged that inspections continue agressively and criticized the Iraqis of drawing this out. He also said that U.S. intelligence had not contributed anything useful to the inspectors and said that Powell's speech last week did not show Iraq moving weapons that the U.N. was aware of.

The French responded saying that the move to war was premature and that the inspectors should continue to do their job. He received unprecedented applause from the U.N. gallery.

Powell spoke next and said that Iraq continued to be in material breach and that the U.S. would respond if the U.N. didn't.

The Security Council is probably firmly against an attack based on Blix's speech. There will be no other resolution to strike against Iraq.

This means that Bush will probably have to act alone and in concert with just a few allies such as Britain, Australia and a few in the Gulf. This won't play well even with the countries that are staunch allies. There were huge anti-war rallies in Britain and Australia today.

Canada has sidestepped the issue of participating for the moment. They are contributing another destroyer, the Iroquois to assist the frigates Winnipeg and Montreal along with Aurora AWAC-like craft and Hercules in the Gulf already. We have also committed 2000 troops to Afghanistan starting soon that will free up U.S troops for other duties. This may keep us out of Iraq though.

Bush is probably planning a new strategy in light of what is going on but the U.S. is still on a war footing and it looks as though nothing will stop him.

How did it come to this? Yes, Iraq is bad and yes, they ought to keep the boot firmly placed on Saddam's neck. But is regime change and the occupation of Iraq over the next years the right choice?

Meanwhile the economy continue to stumble and grow in debt. Bush has to be careful that the regime change that people might contemplate might be how own.

Only Bush and his chosen few know...

the reason why he's so hell bent on war. We can all speculate but we don't actually know

But war is a good way to focus the public's attention away from the economy...
