My low score did not reflect the quality of my work, it was the subject matter that some found offensive. I considered it a victory because I must have gotten a lot of 5s to balance out the 1s offered by zealots.

You are right about the bad votes mostly representing those taking umbrage at the subject. Since they should know what the story is about because of the name and the description and the category, it doesn't make much sense, but what can be done about it?
