Perhaps it is more my personal interpretation of evil. To me, it is a very "cold", premeditated thing. Spike perpetrated abominable acts, true, but he had no agenda; it was all heat of the moment and so gleeful that I never perceived his character as evil. There were no evil machinations in Spike. He didn't set acts into motion and see how they would hurt people; he wanted to dive into the fray simply for the joy of the fight. He wanted to hurt people, but it was all very hands on; he wasn't emotionally manipulative. Again, I come back to the description "child-like". He acted, with no regard to how it was going to hurt someone, but he didn't sit at home and dream up ways to terrorize the masses.
Evil acts: I agree.
Evil character: I disagree.
SPIKE: Do you have any idea what I'm capable of? ... I'm talking about me. You've never met the real me.
BUFFY: Believe me, I'm well aware of what you're capable of.
SPIKE: No. You got off easy too. <stands up> Do you know how much blood you can drink from a girl before she'll die? I do. You see, the trick is to drink just enough, to know how to damage them just enough, so that they'll still cry, when you... <cuts off in pain, then snorts and laughs self-mockingly> Cause it's not worth it if they don't cry.
BUFFY: It's not your fault. You're not the one doing this.
SPIKE: I already did it. It's already done. You wanna know what I've done to girls Dawn's age? This is me Buffy.
