I had to Google noir. I'm pretty sure this is WAY out of my narrow comfort zone. But you know what? Screw it. I wouldn't be me if I stayed in my lane. I have five weeks to figure out what noir is, how to write a sexy violent crime story, and still make it cute and sweet. All of that may be impossible (violent AND sweet?), but... I have an idea... That's right up there with "Hey, Earl, watch this," as famous last words.
I still feel bad about the celebrity story I wrote. I’m never using real people again.
If you have the time, read The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett. It's one of the best in the genre in my opinion. It should give you some good ideas of the style.
Like Chloe says, it’s about mostly about the setting and the particular style of prose. Last year, my entry had no explicitly violent scenes, just a murder investigation (the body was intact upon discovery, so no bloody gore either).I can do all of that except the violence.
Which I know nothing about other than the setting should be dark and urban and the style of prose should be simple and direct. This information was gleaned through a 30-second internet search and reading some comments on this thread. Like knowing gracias, si, and taco doesn't make me bilingual, I feel that my knowledge of the Mickey Spillane world is woefully inadequate. But I'm going to write something anyway. The worst that happens is I get 1-bombed. And I don't care. The best thing that happens is I write another story. So stay tuned as I blindly blunder into something that I have absolutely no business being involved in!
