Paranoia---evidence.

By the way, Spybot S&D does shred files well enough that File Plucker is not able to restore them.

In the tools section there is a file shredder, the defaults are good enough to foil File Plucker.

some possibilities.

hi doc,

Why would you be so paranoid about hiding where you've been and what you've been doing on the internet?

well, supposing you share accomodation [or have a guest], are you ok with your partner [or guest] and/or teen/child retracing your footsteps?

are you ok with people reading your email?

supposing you have an employer, who wants to look at your tracks, maybe because on your lunch break [of course, not on company time], you 'surf.'

ever been-- purely by accident-- to a site with anything that MIGHT be construed as child porn, i.e., 16 yr old persons masquerading at 18 year olds?
have you heard of the periodic 'sweeps' by the vice people of those who've downloaded from sites they're interested in?

another issue, is that not all writers at Lit wish their activities there to become publicized (i.e, your computer records all your visits to Lit and what you read or post)

child custody/adoptions related issues (someone's looking for 'dirt' or evidence of 'bad character').

child abuse or domestic abuse related issues (i.e., you're accused).

issues of leaving/selling/ putting on the curb, your old computer--e.g., with bank transactions, credit card numbers, etc.

do you have any issues with a commercial site 'tracking' you with cookies [for other sites visited], so as to be able to target their marketing.

--what have i left out? anyone?

===

why be paranoid?

question for the modern age, where there is no privacy.

... because 'they' may take an interest in you.... because 'someone' may have it in for you.... because someone may want to take advantage of you....

question

question for the technical?

i've been using plucker and it seems to turn up files which it labels 'pluckable' [100% recoverable], but which i can't read, once they're transferred to CD. 'can't read file header' is the message.

it seems like the content may be shredded, but the title is not. so 'gangbang 1.jpg' is seeable as a title, though its contents seem either out of reach or corrputed. what does it take to eliminate [or scramble] file titles? i've heard of some programs that do this, besides 'secure delete.'

the stuff that's there, having been deleted, and after a 'free space' shred.

i ran this little file recovery program, File Plucker,

http://www.acutetools.com/fileplucker/

it was quite astounding: the old cookies, thumbnails (from galleries), and even correspondence that was pulled up--dozens, even hundreds of files, lacking only the initial character [i.e. 'deleted' in the usual manner].

If I pull up these items is there a way to delete them or is this just showing me what's on my hard drive?

Like I said in my previous post Spybot S&D shreds the file totally. Plucker can't even see the file title.

i ran spybot, and for some reason, though the tutorial speaks of finding 'tracks' (and being able to eliminate them), to be shown in green, as well as spyware, shown in red, i saw only the latter. i suppose some 'option' may be set wrongly.

the other question would be, assuming it can find and dispose of tracks, is this assuming it's used first, e.g., against Temp Int Files; or will it work if some other program has (mostly) deleted them, but they are still recoverable by File Plucker.

Do a search for "secure file deletion" to find utilities like Norton's old wipedisk/wipefile programs. That will get rid of the file itself, but won't do anything about all the temp files that windows sprinkles around the machine.

In the Tools section there is a section called File Sets, there are options that may be unchecked - Usage Tracking - checking these options will find all the usage tracks that have been used.

I would then use that list to feed the Shredder.

Is anyone else inordinately curious about what Pure wants to hide, or is it just me!? :D

It might be nice to know but I don't, deep down inside, care what or why. It's none of my business nor really anyone else...especially the / a governments. ;)

Oh I know... and I'm with ya!

I'm just an incurably curious kitty.... :cathappy:
