Not the normal - what is your best story? - thread

A SINGLE PURPLE ROSE

Category: Non-Erotic

Year published:
2025

Words:
750

Basic premise:
One's battle with dementia

Themes: Essentially a bittersweet love story.

Motivation: Based on what's going on in my life currently, it's an incredibly personal story

Why is it your best story: It's real life.

Anything else we should know about it: I just want to hear people's thoughts about it is all.

Title: Semi-detached

Category: Romance (Halloween Comp)

Year published: 2024

Words: 19k

Basic premise: Vincent, an engineer, and Alice, an analytical chemist, are neighbours in semi-detached housing in outer London. They investigate ghostly moaning coming from underneath Alice's house, only to make shocking discoveries about a previous owner, his crimes, and a powerful aphrodisiac.

Themes: Confronting misogny, respectful relationships, erotic horror, lust.

Motivation: Most of all, to tell an entertaining story where both the leads were genuinely good people trying to respect each other as they uncovered and deal with a shitty crime.

Why is it your best story: Whether it's my best is debatable, but the reader reaction strongly indicated that I succeeded in what I was trying to do - people found it sexy, engaging, fun and a little bit horrifying. They read it, commented, and gave strong votes - it was widely read and it's my highest rated story at the moment.

Anything else we should know about it:
I was really pleased that some of the readers were even well engaged with the ghost in the story (named 'Polly') and cared about the outcome for her. For example:

@Nynah wrote:"This was wonderful to read. Vincent is thoughtful, empathetic and devastatingly English in his stoicism and Alice's verve, inventiveness and quiet strength in the face of trauma is refreshing. They complement each other very well and I'm glad they were able to not only find happiness for themselves, but closure for dear Polly."

@bondagebearuk wrote: "A great ghost/romance story! Very definitely the sort of thing to read on a November night, (when Halloween is safely over for the year!). The conclusion for the ghost struck a definite chord with me for various reasons. Fantastic to have a male lead who isn't all about himself too. A story to be really proud of."

Title: "Catching Up"

Category: Lesbian

Year published:
2025

Words:
4,782

Basic premise:
a woman runs into a former college roommate that she had hoped not to see again

Themes: acknowledging the past (that, and sex)

Motivation: I was trying to write a stroker :p but as I was writing it, I realized I was also touching on how each of us are different people at different times in our lives, and sometimes we miss our old selves, and sometimes we're more than happy to leave our old selves behind (for better or worse, right or wrong).

Why is it your best story: to-date, it's probably the best written of my stories and the one that comes closest to actually having something to say in addition to the smut.

Anything else we should know about it: Nah

So I make that 14, guess that means… Miller Time!

Best is kinda weird, right? Best in which way? Funniest? Most heart-wrenching? Most gripping plot? Most fully developed characters? Hottest sex scenes? Most zingy dialog? Most beautiful use of language? Etc. Etc. I’ll go with something that I think is at least in my top three, and which checks some of the above boxes. It was my Nude Day 2024 entry, and it’s called:

Through the Watching Glass

Category: Exhibitionist & Voyeur

Year published:
2024

Words:
13,700

Basic premise:
A man with an exhibitionist streak, who struggles with social interactions, signs up with a site that matches men and women based on their sexual preferences. They meet either side of a glass wall and enjoy each other’s company vicariously. The MMC becomes fascinated with one woman he meets, a woman whose appearance seems to change like the wind.

Themes: I have discovered a truly marvelous list which this margin is too narrow to contain, but here goes:
  1. The implications of artificial intelligence
  2. The perils of dating
  3. Trauma recovery
  4. Neurodivergence
  5. Man vs bear
  6. Masking, both in an ND context, and between men and women
The characters edge in the story, but the whole story can be viewed as edging with the reader’s preconceptions.

Motivation: I wanted to write about people like me, and how we can have rich sexual and emotional lives, and yet struggle in other ways. I also find EV interesting to write as it’s not an IRL kink of mine, but I can kind of see the appeal, assuming consent on both parties. Lewis Carrol’s Through the Looking Glass was a guide for me in writing, not plot or characters, but its focus on duality and how what we see is a reflection of ourselves. And I wanted to try to twist together all of the above themes to create a compelling psychological mystery story (maybe more a whydunnit than a whodunnit) and to embrace growth for the characters.

Why is it your best story: Prior to my work-in-progress novel, it was certainly my most ambitious story. And I surprised myself with how much of what I set out to do I actually achieved. I think my ancillary characters and the contributions they make to the plot are strong. And I believe the central narrative is well-executed. I was particularly pleased when fellow neurodivergents said that the story made them feel seen. The plot is taut, and at least semi-believable. And I love both the MMC and FMC dearly.

Anything else we should know about it: It would have won Nude Day 2024 comfortably without last minute tactical down-voting. But that’s the nature of Literotica competitions, and it’s not going to change. At least I have the satisfaction of knowing it was good work.

Ok I’ll bite.

Title- The Beijing Streakers.

https://www.literotica.com/s/the-beijing-streakers

Category: Celebrities & Fan Fiction.

Year Published: 2008.

Basic Premise: A group of Olympic athletes use masked public nudity to shock the Communist Chinese government with a political statement during the 2008 Olympics Closing Ceremonies. This draws them into a tense foot chase through a crowded Tienamen Square, where they are unexpectedly aided by ancient Chinese heroes and the Chinese people. The athletes escape to a ship hideout and there enjoy a hot orgy with a media team who were reporting on the situation earlier.

Themes- defiance of unjust authority, proud pursuit of pleasure and freedom, the connections between the characters, friendship and lust.

Motivation- I wanted to write something shocking and fun.

Why it’s a candidate for my best story- I’m not calling it the best because I like to consider all my stories as good in some way, but this is one of the most memorable. I actually had to ask Amazon to take it down a few years ago after some jerk plagiarized it and was trying to sell it on Kindle. None of my other work has ever gotten that kind of attention. It’s gotten a lot of acclaim over the years too. The after party orgy remains the biggest sexual event I have ever written with sixteen participants, lots of varied interactions, and crazy situations. I think I plugged the story for a previous thread of this type and I gladly do so again.

Anything Else To Know- The characters include several figures inspired by the Koei Dynasty Warriors video games. You can also read my other stories featuring Cat Osterman for some background (Debrief, Two Cats in Heat, Catbird Seat). Enjoy!

Why is it your best story: Because I feel like I struck so many different notes, and nailed them all. It is both very funny and very sad, it has sex and violence and I hope, a bit of wisdom. But most of all, because I created a cast of characters that I really love, and that readers have told me they love as well (Hi, @Omenainen)

I do love the Gold Dollar Girls! Everyone should read it. Well, all of them, but the first is the plottiest and thus best.

I do love the Gold Dollar Girls! Everyone should read it. Well, all of them, but the first is the plottiest and thus best.

I second that. It's very good, with a strong cast of real and easily relatable characters, and natural witty dialogue.

Title: AI Era: Fusion Tug Clara Solti

Category: Sci-Fi & Fantasy (written for the “AI: A New Era” story event)

Year published:
2024

Words:
28.8k

Basic premise:

Set on an interplanetary spaceship controlled by a murderous artificial intelligence. Unavoidably “2001: A Space Odyssey” themed, but without any monolith/deus-ex-machina aspects. This was written as ‘hard sci-fi’ containing nothing alien or supernatural.

Themes:

At a personal level: knowledge, experience, memories, identity, friendship, and love.

At a political level: crony capitalism, corruption, AI ‘creativity’, oppression, and revolution.

Motivation:

Like Statuesque before it, I wanted to tell a story where ‘average’ people facilitate a happy ending. (Oops – wrong wording, it isn’t a stroker.) I wanted to tell a story where average people, doing their job well, end up in a position to triumph over evil.

Along the way I’m planting seeds of wisdom, such as the government’s role in regulating corporations. If the reader is smart enough, they just might notice some parallels with current events.

Why is it your best story:

This story enchants with its storyline. The world-building and sequence of events make for a compelling read. There are parts where you will need to stop reading and think about the implications of what just happened… Ethical questions you’ve never considered. Possibilities you’ve never contemplated.

While the rough story outline was planned, (taking inspiration from Dreamscape (1984), Brainstorm (1983), 2001: A Space Odyssey (Arthur C. Clark), and other classics), a bunch of story elements just fit together in an unplanned way. I’m not sure I can repeat it... I surprised myself.

Anything else we should know about it:

The strong story contrasts with my amateur writing. Described as a 'car crash that exploded' I’ve made many writing errors, from typos to tense.

Some aspects of the story are under-explored, such as the privacy implications of the new technology. Also, the ending is wrapped up too quickly in an epilogue because I didn’t want a series and I had to beat the story event deadline.

Sphinx and Mouse
Sphinx and Mouse Ch. 02

Category: Nonhuman

Year published: 2024/25

Words: ~15k between both chapters

Basic premise: Two-part monsterfucker/fetish story. Timid researcher encounters a sphinx while traveling and fails to answer her riddles.

Themes: None whatsoever. Well, maybe a little bit of self-acceptance and overcoming shyness, but that's pushing it. It's not intended to have any kind of depth.

Motivation: I wanted to explore a foot fetish variation laced with domination and predator/prey themes. It also gave me a way to experiment with writing a f/f piece, which I had not done before.

Why is it your best story: It's a longer and more descriptive one that is also more adventurous and out-of-the-box (I wonder if my usual bondage/imprisonment stories could be thought of as "in the box?" 😅 ) Also it has some riddles and what could loosely be considered an actual plot.

Anything else we should know about it: It's not for everyone.

Full Moon Mischief

Category: Exhibitionist & Voyeur

Year published:
2025

Words:
3k

Basic premise:
A woman puts on a show for someone who might or might not be watching.

Themes: Solitude and connection, distance and closeness, self-love and shared experience... or maybe it's just a stroker.

Motivation: Written for the Nude Day contest, based on the idea of being naked at home.

Why is it your best story: It's the only one I've completed. So far.

Anything else we should know about it: By this time you could have read the story and rubbed one out.

Songs of Seduction - Water

SciFi/Fantasy

2018

7300 words

Basic premise: A world in which the male and female of the human species is ambiguous, and a young man discovers the female of the species.

Themes: gender, transition, what it is to be human.

Motivation: inspired one Christmas day in Australia, when I went to the beach and came back from the water to discover a young woman had laid her towel down not all that far away from mine. She lay on her back reading a book, and her fingers were (subconsciously?) tracing small patterns over her belly, feeling the heat of the sun on her skin, I guess. Very erotic to watch.

Why is it your best story: it came out of the blue and wrote itself in maybe ten hours all told, including edit. Lyrical, contemplative, what it is to be human. I didn't know exactly what I'd written until my two betas at the time said, do you understand what you've just written? Is it good? Fuck me, EB, are you stupid?

Anything else we should know about it: the me in the story is me, aged about 22 or 23, the long beach is the place where my parents build a summer house and I would drive there from Canberra every summer, the same beach where my dad died, suddenly, the day after Boxing Day, five years later. The off-shore islands in the story don't exist, and I didn't have a bicycle.

Title: On a Wing and a Prayer

Category: Lesbian (though could easily have gone in Sci Fi, Romance, or First Time)

Year published: October 2024

Words: 32,600 (over two parts)

Basic premise: In an unspecified future, a branch of the Church of LDS (though I never use that term or Mormon, but it's obvious who they are) have terraformed and settled a new planet. The population is still very small and pastoral. Thanks to the lower gravity and some extremely strong yet lightweight polymers, two female scientists work out that human powered flight is possible. This lets them dream of a different destiny than the one their fathers will choose for them.

Themes: Resistance, triumph over adversity, love, guilt, shame, resilience, female agency, friendship

Motivation: So, the idea of being able to fly off with my best friend/crush into the countryside was a long held fantasy of mine. Like 25 years old at least. That was the premise. But I was also really interested in dystopias that look like utopias. Because their world is ideal for all - the vast majority - who subscribe to the creed. But what of the minority who don't? And how do you flee when there is nowhere to flee to? Plus, if you've never heard of or conceived of the idea of two women making love, how would those first attempts go? How would they work that out?

Why is it your best story: First of all, I've no idea if it's my best. How would I know? On what metric? (Usually the story I'm writing right now is always my best.)

But I love it. I'm proud of it. I wish more people had read it. It has far fewer views and votes than most of the stories I've published since.

In some ways - friends to lovers, first time with a woman, attention paid to the idioms the characters use - it's very similar to my other stories.

Yet in other ways it is very different. It has a thrilling action sequence, which isn't something I usually do. My writing is normally quite light, but part 1 is tense and oppressive throughout. The characters communicate in poetic code, meaning I had to write sonnets and an acrostic. There are hundreds of little things I breathed into this to make the world and characters real and round, some of which the comments show readers spotted, others might just have been for me. But reading this again, I can see it all, clear as day in my mind's eye.

Anything else we should know about it: Most of my stories were inspired by either songs and/or literotica stories. This wasn't; it was a mix of my fantasy with John Wyndham's "The Chrysalids", Atwood's "Handmaid's Tale", slave narratives and a touch of Anne McCaffrey's Pern novels.

The ending is, admittedly, a little weak. Maybe, one day, I'll write a third part.

Feels almost like choosing between one's children, but what the heck.
Title: Chemistry of Love

Category: I submitted it under Romance, but it was published under First Time (which is accurate, but I still think Romance was a better fit)

Year published:
2017

Words:
25,800

Basic premise:
Two shy college students secretly adore one another. Their more outgoing best friends think they know better. But they don't.

Themes: Being shy is not a crime. As someone who was routinely made to feel three inches tall because I didn't have the gift of gab, I wish more kids - and adults who work with kids - could get that through their heads. At least in my fiction they do!

Motivation: April Fool's contest (it placed a very close second!), and I wanted a story where being introverted was not a crime.

Why is it your best story: There are several subplots that all come together quite well, if I do say so myself, and I think the charactization was one of my best efforts (the male antagonist was based on my best friend in high school, and unfortunately I really hit the nail on the head - I'm still reminded of him when I re-read it now). Also, I think I did a pretty good job of making the reader care about the alpha couple and want them to have a happy ending.

Anything else we should know about it: In real life, one of the very first fans of my writing (outside of my family) was a girl in my English class senior year of high school. I barely knew her, but on the morning after graduation as I was leaving the all-night grad party, she totally surprised me with a hug and said, "It was great listening to your stories this year!" In the story, the female protagonist is a fan of a fictional author who writes very steamy romances. I named that author after the girl from high school. :)

Justice

Category: Novels/Novellas

Year published:
2023

Words:
80,748

Basic premise:
In this teasingly erotic story, a slow-burn enemies-to-lovers romance takes place along the always popular Grand Strand of South Carolina. Ten years of sought-after vengeance collides with ten years of perceived betrayal. One opponent will rely upon her fierce determination and the legal system while the other will rely upon character, morality, and the truth as he knows it. Both will come to rely upon the other as the true facts become known to each of them.

Themes: A broken heart can love better than before

Motivation: Writing a meaningful story involving mental illness that incorporates several characters and locales that I know in real life.

Why is it your best story: I don’t claim that it is my best, but I had a lot of fun writing it to include several friends as characters.

Anything else we should know about it: The published version received an honorable mention at the 2025 Los Angeles Book Festival

Thank you @EmilyMiller for getting people to do this. And thank everyone who has put an entry up here. This is assembling a wonderful reading list (as if I needed more). But everything here has moved to the top of the list (well behind one story I just promised someone I would read). There are categories here I generally avoid and authors here who I have yet to taste, so I am excited for that. Like almost any college course can be enjoyable if well taught, almost any story can be enjoyable, regardless of category if well written. I am reading the shorter ones first, so it may be a few days til I get to yours @BobbyBrandt. I promise to leave a comment on each story that I read as a thank you for our offering here to the community.

Right now I am still wiping the tears from my cheeks after reading @TiberiusPrime single purple rose.

Welcome! I thought ‘make a virtue of a vice.’ We all (me too) like to promote our own work. At least this way we also talk about writing at the same time.

And I should give a nod to @StillStunned (what no cat?) who created the WIWAW concept. These are in effect mini-WIWAWs. So maybe go write an actual WIWAW about the same stories. They are interesting and valuable resources IMO.

Based on the time I have outside of work, writing, and beta / proof reading. I have a year’s worth of things to read now 😊.

Right now, I am fighting the end of my WIP. I know what it will be, but the words won't flow. I am too stubborn to put it down and work on something else. So instead, I get to procrastinate and read everyone else's stories. Win-win, except for Mistress Natasha, I guess, who would like to be released.
