What's your best story?

Actually I care WAY TOO MUCH about what strangers on the internet think of me and the things I make, otherwise I'd just save my stories to a text file on my desktop and leave it there 😅

Well your example has encouraged me to actually share something. Although I'm gonna do something a little different.

The link below is an audio recording of an excerpt from what I consider one of my best stories, The Seduction Of Darkness.

The audio is part one of that story: Rise Of The She-Demon.

Resident Madame did an absolutely brilliant job bringing the story and my characters to life far beyond my wildest expectations.

Sadly, it hasn't found a huge audience. And so I'll promote it here, hoping some of you may take the time to check it out.

If you enjoy the audio and wish to read the rest of the story, ill link that too.

I think a lot of folks on AH fear "The Evil Eye," a curse put on you by the envy of other people, leading to misfortune and ruin.

It's a cultural superstition found pretty much all over the world in one form or another. But it's also a way of teaching and acculturating people to downplay or conceal their own success or happiness, for fear of making other people envious. It's a memetic tool for maintaining hierarchies and keeping people in their place.

It's why those blue glass naẓar eyeball beads and amulets are so popular as jewelry or decorations. It's why athletes and musicians thank god after making a touchdown or winning an award whatever, and why people criticize athletes and artists that they perceive as too arrogant or proud of their abilities.

It's why some Lit authors are scared to promote their work, and why some authors criticize other authors for promoting their work or getting too "uppity," or quietly one-bomb authors that they dislike or perceive as rivals.

Anyway, my story that I'm most proud of (so far) is Accessibility Compliance! I'm really happy with the structure of it, the technical details that I tried really hard to get right, the characters and how they were received by readers, and the message I hope it conveys

You trying to goad me into posting a link, Miss Thompson? You and your memetic and acculturating.

I’ll have nun of your shameless self-promotion. It’s just a habit you’ve picked up. Best draw a veil over it, m’kay?

Caution advised.

Calling attention to your stories on this board can bring out the hordes of one bombers.
That's not really true; otherwise, there are a couple of AH-ers who wouldn't have a story above a 3.0 rating, yet they have plenty of Red Hs. Bombings happen, and sometimes they can get triggered by forum activity, but simply linking your story here won't usually do it.

My Nude Day story is the only story I have written that I am happy with. It is not perfect, but I have doubts I will ever write another as good. It is also my highest rated single story, so apparently the readers agree. Unlike MB, I do not get the readership to be immune to 1 bombs (the sweeps do help though), but this one has been battered repeatedly. It hurts everytime it happens, but I have come to expect it anyway.

I'm not sure about my 'best', but the one I like the most is 'Semi-detached', which coincidentally is my highest rated at the moment (possibly about to change rapidly if the bombing-from-threads thing happens!). I tried to write main characters that I really liked personally and had a bit of me (or at least the person I'd like to be) in them. And I did work hard on the ghost story and architecture elements of the plotting, and hopefully pulled that off okay. When I reread my stories, I usually find something that makes me cringe, but not so far with this one.

I honestly have no idea. I've asked myself this question, and I have no answer.

My most popular story is Late Night on the Loveseat with Mom, which has over 2.26 million views, and it has far more favorites than any other story of mine, but I don't think it's my best.

I write different stories with different artistic objectives, so it's very difficult for me to compare one to another.

I have no idea. It's like comparing apples and orangutans. I'm partial to everything I published, unsurprisingly, even if they appear as horrific fruit-primate hybrids to others.

Note to self: The time may be ripe for an erotic parody of Attack of the Killer Tomatoes.

Was there ever a wrong time to write this? Let us know when you do!

I think elements of several different things are the best thing I've written here, but a whole? I haven't written it yet.

Yeah, I've got a bunch of stories that have mostly achieved what I wanted, but generally there's a weakness. Or they're great for a reader with interests very closely aligned to mine, but not many other people. Some stories only work properly if you've read certain previous ones, for example.

One story I'm proud of is Gas Station Guy, for the character who gets built over the first few pages. It's 5.5 pages long and the last one isn't as clear prose as I'd like, but otherwise it meets my aim. I won't get offended by any readers who bail after 3-4 pages, as the sex won't be everyone's cup of tea - not that I'd ever know!

Homesick Hallowe'en similarly evokes an American's experience of being homesick in London - the Romance aspect is secondary. Third Time Getting Lucky is arguably long and rambling but successfully compares three different 'first times'.

Turkish Delight copies KeithD's 'travelogues with gay sex', with extra emotions because the characters previously had their own series. Denying Alex does quite well at telling a story in 750 words, only the title did piss off huge numbers of readers - the only story I've deleted multiple comments on (as did Laurel). It's not perfect but as an hour-long writing exercise, again it works.

I think my best story is my lowest-rated (besides my 750-word stories, whose ratings I don't count): My Eliza, a Mind Control story where everything may not be what it seems. Didn't land with readers of the category, but I think it's unique, well-written, and intensely, darkly erotic. Might have been a better fit for the horror category, but I'd have needed to tweak some elements.

That wasn't always the case here but yes, I'd be cautious about humble-bragging about our own stories.

A one-bomber hits the Lit-story target hard. I'm not sure why, but those people seem to prefer four-engine B-24 Liberators. A pretty reliable plane, I guess. Unless, it they are going nuclear, a B-29 is their way to do it.

For the record, since I linked to my story in this thread, I have gotten 21 new views and ticked up one notch on the rating...
