New Mexico governor directs $10 million in taxpayer money to build abortion clinic

New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed an executive order on Wednesday that directs $10 million in taxpayer money to fund a new abortion clinic in the state to meet an expected rise in demand for the procedure.

The clinic is to be built in southern New Mexico's Dona Ana County, along the border with Texas, where abortions have been banned since the Supreme Court's June ruling overturning Roe v. Wade.

Lujan Grisham is battling Republican Mark Ronchetti, a meteorologist, for reelection.

"New Mexico was already the abortion capital of the United States, and now taxpayers are having to foot the bill for a clinic which will perform abortions up to the moment of birth for non-residents who come from other states around the country,” Ronchetti said.
