Never sure how to pick a category

Really? I'm curious now what you would have expected?

That the average reader in T/I only cares about Step-son getting mommy in bed and sticking whatever willing hole she has, without any concern for love/feelings/etc.

But that's based on nothing more than my preconceptions about the category with no experience to back that up at all so it could very well be totally off-base.

I'll need to read that guide because it sounds like I'm completely mistaken.

eta: and I want to read that guide just for its awesome title.

2nd eta: and reading just the beginning of it is enough for me to tell I'm guilty of the stereotyping he mentions very early on.

Come to think of it, why don't more Hallmark movies involve incest? Mom and Son could cuddle naked in front of the fireplace on Christmas morning! Just think of the ratings!!

I tried to avoid that myself. I have a story categorized as BDSM and I put all parts of the story in it even though technically certain parts aren't in that category and some parts don't even contain any sexual content period. I tagged the individual parts correctly but it felt misleading at best to put part #14 in "romance" even if that one part falls into that category when the rest of them don't.
I didn't discover the forum (and this advice) until just after I started spreading my first series across categories (E&V, then EC and GS). I think it worked out okay for me, but who knows, maybe it would have been better if I had stuck to one category.

Oh, and I've been a member since 2018 and yet I still have no idea wtf people in that category actually want or expect
I saw another thread talking about how it's basically three categories of expectations which are all mutually exclusive and all get mad about stories that conform to one of the other plot beats than the one they want... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Well, shit, now that masochistic urge is really gnawing at me!

Speaking of which, that highlights another trouble I have, since my BDSMey style is rather different than the stereotypical Dom/Domme in leathers expecting a "yes, master/mistress" for every response. Mine is typically more freeform, kinda just playacting at the roles instead of rigidly establishing them, or engaging in pain play in the moment because the pain itself is arousing...

Which now that I think about it might just mean that it's more Fetishey than BDSMey. A shame really, I'd had hopes to write in as many categories as I could, but I just don't jive with more 'traditional' BDSM. (Yes, I did just string those two words together. Bring on the hordes accusing me of ragebait.)

Subverting tropes can be so fascinating, though! That doesn't automatically just make it fetish IMHO

I'll also say that outside the various trumps readers will give a decent bit of leeway to series compared to single entries. Filtering effect and all that, but also it's a consequence of developed, established relationships that the audience buys into. And if you want to jump categories, that's fine. People do that and some do it pretty successfully.

Slow learner?

;)
Definitely not, I'm totally on track for a completely normal erotica writer, yep!

It's the Z's....
...What Zs?

Somehow I read this as you responding this to yourself (my eyes went crossed for a moment) and got VERY confused.
Well actually I am a small puppet being marionetted by Kelliezgirl to make pithy remarks at herself with.
(*Shhh*, this is why I'm a slow learner, there's not a lot of room up there for an extra tenant if you know what I mean.)
