NaNoWriMo

Well, I've had a novel in my head the past five years I keep meaning to write. I guess this is as good a reason as any. Okay, just one question - does this absolve me of deer hunting responsibilities this year?

Absolutely not. I still expect to have my deer meat for dinner all through December. So you'd better make sure you get out there and get it for me.

Oh wait...you're not my wife.

Sure, you're absolved. ;)

Ah good, will you tell my brothers and father? Please? You could write me a note excusing me from deer hunting. They'll bring me a deer, I know they will.

ETA: I'm on NaNo as MagicaPractica if anyone wants me for a buddy. :D

Every year, I use special character charts that I found on the net once. They're great help for preparing for NaNo, as they help you get a thourough build of each of your characters. You describe them in details you might otherwise not have thought of, and this makes them more like full figures in your mind, which makes it easier to write a really good story. I offer them every year. ;)

Okay, this is making me actually want to write like I haven't wanted to in several months. Guess I'll have to work on my pre-writing for the novel. Sounds like that's allowed.

Research, outlining chapters, building your characters with sheets like Svenska has....all that is fine to get done ahead of time.

A note of caution, though: last year I think I overdid the prep for NaNo, so when it came time to actually sit down and write the stupid thing, I was past tired of the plot that I had come up with, and it was like pulling teeth to get a few words typed.

Don't do so much prep that your planned plot becomes stale and boring to you.

No NaNo for me this year - not sure I'd have the energy and I've too much work to finish as it is. I'll be here offering support, helping anyone who needs research, chastising, a dictionary or a bunch of flowers. Good luck all.

I've never written NaNo, but these charts sound good for just about any kind of long story. I'd love to have access to them. :)

Me too, please. I know what I want to have happen plot-wise, but my characters could use some beefing up.

Some helpful threads in the NaNo forums for anyone who is still in need of plot, characters, titles, etc. This way you won't have to hunt them down as they move around in the forums.

Adopt-a-Plot

Adopt-a-Character

Adopt-a-Title

Outlining help : place to find resources to help with your plot outline

The Dare Thread and More Dares : finding it hard to make the word count? Use these plot ninjas!

Experts Thread and Resource thread : need help on a particular subject? Check here!

I'm adding these to the first post of the thread so they won't get lost in the middle if someone needs them.

Thanks for the sage advice. :rose:

I added MagicaPractica, yelled at my mom for not completing her registration, and then promptly forgot to add anyone else. Shite. Okay, so I'm FallingToFly over there as well... add me!

And ty Svenska, these look like fun.

Thanks FTF!

Hey, what type of novel is everybody writing? It might be chicklit but I'm trying for Literary Fiction ala Amy Tan.

Not sure yet... I have a handful of outlines. I think I may scrap previous ideas and write my Crow novel, The Lady In The Lake. It's tickling me with ideas.

Sounds like an excellent place to start, when something is tickling you with ideas.

Those are great links, Crim. I especially thought the adopt-a-character one was interesting.

An "Other fiction": cross of historical fiction/romance/erotic/exploration of disabilities

A romance with two plots: one historical and the other contemporary.
