There is a huge difference.
Turning to friends or family is something I've done it the past and found that their 'advice' was in the form of 'you should do this' or 'you should have done that' which is less than helpful.
As a person with depression and social anxiety having people telling me that I should just 'try to feel better' or that maybe getting my hair done is the way to go not only didn't help it made me feel like a failure when all that stuff didn't work.
To have a person who is impartial, who doesn't have a preconceived idea of what my life should look like was like being set free.
Having someone who knows the right questions rather than a friend or family member is the other thing. Mostly those people mean well and try but don't have real help to give--often make things worse.
I don't want someone to tell me what to do, I don't even want to be herded in one direction or the other. What I want is someone who can help me find the blocks that are keeping me from being able to make good decisions and learn to get around them or tear them down.
 
A few months back, or at least a few issues back, TIME magazine published an issue that said, on the cover, in big bolded words, 'The ME ME ME Generation.'

We're getting softer in a world that isn't supposed to be soft. And at the same time, we make the world harder to live in. We lower our expectations and our backing and our assistance where it's needed most in the young men and women in our schools, giving them free reign to pass class time on Facebook and twitter, to pass their classes and graduate with only the most basic understanding of subject material, and then blare over the loudspeakers how disappointed we are at the lack of education and egotism rampant in the youth of today. There's less and less of a demand for menial, entry-class jobs and also less and less emphasis on giving people the basic skills and mental attitude needed to succeed in life.

Now, I love to compete. Absolutely love it. I love to win too. But I realise that it comes with a price, and that competing with people at a lower tier than you is worthless. Encouragement is vital, but encouraging mediocrity is poisonous.

It's such a complex issue. It should probably be taken to some discussion thread, not here on the Litiquette thread.
 
This thread is ultimately in the hands of the posters. As OP I have the privilege to moderate but certainly wouldn't tell the room that a topic didn't belong. Part of why this thread is successful is because if the open candor the participants have. The only time I will step in is when there is aggressive or abusive behavior. And once a topic has come to it's natural end I'll toss out another like:

What about my profile pic? Lol

I only meant that it's not particularly a Litiquette question, but more a general musing about society's flaws. My apologies. I didn't mean to assume your role. :)

I dunno. Pics hold no special appeal for me. Find something that speaks to you, that speaks of you. I don't think I know enough about you to make much more than a random guess. lol. What's your favourite colour?
 
We were talking profile pic, right?

I hate when my attempted humour fails.

Just didn't one anyone to think a topic was off limits, as we've strayed a bit from the original thread anyway.

A color wouldn't be much of a pic......:confused:
