In your opinion, what situations might require an emergency room visit?

One would like to hope that at least there was a BIG bet involved. But there never is, is there?
"Hey Jim, I dare ya to stick this cherry bomb up your ass and light it."
"Oh ya, after 5 years in the big house my ass can take anything."
A scene you'll never see on broadcast TV.

Your family reunions sound quite lively!

Robbie, ya old peckerhead, are ya ever gonna start spellin my name correctly?

Personally, I'd never go to the ED. All bleeding stops eventually. I'm lucky to have enough doctor friends that I can skip it unless I need surgery. Which is good because my health insurance sucks but I don't blame ACA or the President, I put the blame where it truly belongs. On the greedy insurance companies.

And Press Ganey can suck my tit.

Crazy Glue works wonders on deep cuts that might otherwise require stitches.

I had heard that as well, and Wiki also speaks to medical use, but based on the smell of the fumes, I would think that application into an open wound would burn like hell. No?

When I flipped a car in Dec '15, they stapled my scalp lacerations shut with a staple gun (surprisingly, it didn't hurt a bit, but everyone winced at each "kuh-chuck" staple going in....and the squick sound it made when being pulled out with surgical wrenches ten days later)

All the other various lacerations were fixed with crazy glue and steri-strips. Very minimal scarring.

Almost 10 yrs ago, I cut my index finger to the bone (thro my fingernail) while trying to prepare food for us after a full day of drinking.
None of us were able to drive for help as we were all way over the limit at a secluded campsite.
Superglue was my only option.
I glued and gaffa-taped my finger, and healed without a problem and only a very faint scar.
And no - it didn't sting or burn at all.

It's a little stinggy in the parts it's able to seep down into a bit, but generally speaking you should be either holding it closed or if it's clean cut just not pulling it apart during application.

Another emergency first aid item most folks don't think about is tampons for gunshot or other puncture wounds.

If you have a gore pit put a tampon in it, the removal is agonizing but it can be the cork that saves your life until you get to a surgeon.

Local weather dude had to have a gerbil removed. But that was quite a few years before I came along on the job

oo anyone I know??

I haven't been to an ER (for myself) since I was a kid.

I had to take the kids a few times, stitches and broken bones or for a breathing treatment for my son when he was very young.

It's only been in the last year since I've gotten health insurance again after not having had it for years and years. It would have to be something really big for me to go and before insurance I would have had to have been literally at deaths door to go because I cannot have that kind of debt. It was something that I worried about almost obsessively at least five years leading up to finally getting health insurance.

Just before NYE my boss/Dr. made me go home from work because I got that horrible URI that's going around right now and my O2 Sat was 92%. She got me to leave by telling me that if I didn't that I'd probably end up in the hospital.

Oh! and our ER takes forever even though there's rarely anyone actually there. It's ridiculous. They sit around and chat and waste other peoples time. I've seen them hustle when an ambulance brings someone in. I'm talking about when I've had to take the kids for stitches and such.

Working at a Dr. office I've had people who will get annoyed if they can't be worked into the schedule, stating they don't want to wait as a walkin, and instead will just go take Jr. to the ER for his sniffles. Those are typically the people who have always had Medicaid and totally abuse it. It's frustrating. It's ridiculous.

-- Also, maybe not be hard/annoyed with your family. They love you and just want you to be ok. :)

Yes, I'm sure you would recognize the name.

I've seen your ER, it should never take forever there!

Sorry you got that bug, it is evil! I'm glad you listened to your boss/doc. A 92 O2 sat at your age?! that's very concerning.

Yeah the frequent flyers can be a real trip. And we all know who they are, bless their hearts.

Yeah, the fam and friends meant well. My irked attitude didn't last long.

Ontario is only better in the smaller hospitals- too many stoopid welfare types using Emergency as a doctor's office...

The quality of care is great, but waiting one's "turn" can be trying...

REAL emergencies are addressed promptly - arrive via EMS, and one's at the front of the line.

I have only have only arrived via ambulance once that I can remember. Usually it is faster for someone just to stuff me in a car and go. A few times I was transported via stretcher through the halls to the ER from a clinic and once the ER team came down the hall to urgent care because I was too unstable to move at that point.

I hate going to the er. I am a zebra. Medical personnel rarely read the ER protocol that I carry with me, or contact my specialist, even when I am in his hospital!
My blood work and everything can look really weird when I am having a reaction.

I try never to go alone to the ER, and always have an advocate who understands my stuff either come with me or meet me there. Sometimes a lot of people show up. A few times my posse has come up with solutions when the er drs were stumped.

What I would go for:
Broken bones- neck, leg
Dehydration
Major hives esp. if they swell mouth or lips
Continuous vomiting and/or runs
Can't breath or feel like breathing through water
Angioedema in chest
Unusual fainting, near fainting accompanied by a impending sense of doom
Inhaling fumes that causes temporary blindness or passing out
Loss of coordination
Excessive swelling
Excessive pain
Deep cuts esp. if it doesn't hurt.
Being in shock
Bleeding that won't stop
Serious burns
Cutting off digits
stab wounds
gun shots
extreme pain

I am supposed to epi and go if more than two systems (mouth, lungs, skin, nose, throat, heart/blood vessels, stomach) are involved in an allergic reaction.
So far, I don't do this. I have rescue meds, I try them first and call for help.

Shhh! The statute of limitations isn't quite up yet.

They superglued my cut on my chin. Given all my various injuries, I still haven't had stitches.

Cool! I had the end of my pinky superglued back on in urgent care. It healed pretty well. It is just a bit shorter than the other and the nail is perfect now.:)

Oh yeah, I check my BP, pulse rate and O2 at home, if it gets bad, I go in.

I thought super-glue would sting first time I tried it. But didn't. It was CPVC cement first used as a sheet metal worker. Works well enough. Don't know if it glues flesh or just clings enough to hold small cuts closed. But crazy glue is in all my first aid kits now.

Haven't had to glue the end of a finger back on. Assuming it was just the fleshy bit at the end hanging off.

Yes, from the side. Took off 1/2 of the nail too.
