Hello From My Englishness

Hi all, back after a bit of a break. Feeling the need to reach out and connect with people for the social interaction.

How is everyone?

Everyone. 8.00pm UK time. Don't forget to show your appreciation for our wonderful NHS and those who are risking so much for us.

Was lovely to see so many outside participating but would be even better to see them demonstrating along side them, on the streets, when their pay rises are been decided.

Good to see you back. :rose:

Just heard on the news that the US has now surpassed China and has the highest number of confirmed cases.

Morning everyone. I hope everyone's well and staying safe. We're out of quarantine today, hurrah. Going food shopping, and will pick up a few things for some vulnerable neighbours, which feels good after how helpful everyone was when we were self-isolating.

Morning Angelica. I'm not sure the raw totals are especially helpful. The cases per 1M population and deaths per 1M population are a better indicator of the effect on a country, I'd say. There's a good sortable table here:

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

I think given what we know about the way it develops, the US spread is going to get worse before it gets better though. And if people are encouraged to 'get back to work' rather than to stay home and practise social distancing, it will get a lot worse...

It doesn’t help people understand the seriousness of self isolation and social distancing when trump still appears in his daily press surrounded by his cronies all within touching distance.

In the uk, they keep 6 foot apart and no press in the room, they are all on video links.

It doesn't help our friends across the pond when he says it'll be over by Easter . Ultra fake news

We're all doing great, the people are getting better, we have tremendous success. It'll be over by Easter. We are prepared for a smaller circumstance. Social distancing looks very nice. I knew it was a pandemic before it was labelled a pandemic .....

How could anyone doubt Trump?

Hopefully it will be over for him by Easter when they can’t find a ventilator for him when he wants one.

Yes...our national embarrassment. He is a horrid example of a human being. I am waiting for Dr. Fauci to tell him to just fucking shut up. Although he should also be telling them to stand farther apart...I'm sure he has, but the orange one doesn't listen. The per capita data definitely gives a more nuanced picture of the situation. The evening news had released that one statistic as I was typing that post.

Someone over there must have voted for him but I haven't yet found anyone who'll own up to it!

Well just remember all of this when election time arrives soon.

You certainly don't need to tell me. I didn't vote for him the first time around.

An old school friend shared something on FB today, “when this is all over, instead of Red Nose Day, we should have NHS day” ... I was very tempted to respond: when this is all over, we should have a government that funds the NHS.

I'd pay money to see Dr. Fauci go all Brooklyn on Trump.

Dr. Fauci's from Brooklyn:
https://history.nih.gov/nihinownwords/assets/media/pdf/fauci89.pdf

Pre-late 1990s/early 2000s, Brooklyn was a scrappy part of New York City, parts of it still are. That's where I spent part of my childhood in the 1960s-1970s.

To go all Brooklyn means to lose you reserve and settle it like we would have in the neighborhood back in the day vs. being polite and reserved.

I'm doing ok here. I've been working from home, able to get what I need. A few people at work have tested positive. They are doing well. Incubation window has passed.

Trying to keep a good attitude and stay busy and in touch with friends and family through chat, etc.

Sending good thoughts and wishes to the essential employees who have to be out there like health care people, grocery store workers, etc.

I'm with you Mr D, next time the NHS pay negotiations start everyone who claps on a Thursday should be marching along side the nurses unions. And it's time for all the unions to step up and support everyone that can't do it for themselves, they are all the heroes in this.

Absolutely! We need to see a return to a unionised work force and those unions recognising their own power. It is a national shame that professional key worker’s pay has remained static over the years while a certain ‘profession’ has been able to elevate its own pay to near despicable levels.

This pandemic has exposed the system, shown the parts of society that enable the population to keep going.

I’ve gone all Citizen Smith!

There has been a couple of offshoots: Boo for Boris (think it’s Sunday at 8) and Moon for Morons.

Fauci is the only one in the government that actually knows what he is talking about!
