Hello From My Englishness

...and revise the rules relating to tax avoidance to fund the services in the countries where the profits are made

No government contracts given to companies who avoid tax with loopholes and stash their cash off shore.

All quiet on the western front, no incoming hot cough balls so far.

Heading to Costco to hopefully stock up for the foreseeable future. From now on, for those things that cannot be stocked up on, I will be trying to shop only once every 1-2 weeks. Not really leaving the house otherwise. Hope you all are doing well. :rose:

Luckily I have managed to keep a weekly grocery delivery. Their stock levels are improving now that they are limiting store visits

Foreseeable future. I didn't see that coming... to quote Hill St Blues *Be careful out there *

Pol! You lovely person, you! How you doing? Keep hanging in there, thinking of you.

I’m trying really hard to not politicise what is going on ... but the government has mishandled this one. Okay, there is no manual on ‘what to do when a worldwide pandemic of new virus threatens your way of life ... for dummies’. Germany has been able to stem the tide through testing, apparently, they have the facilities for testing. I’m no expert, a mere layman, but don’t the universities have industry standard facilities for research and could handle the testing? Gove’s come out saying the chemicals are in shortage, experts say: no shortage, they haven’t been asked to make the testing reagents. Now, the ventilator fiasco. BBC article today states that this weekend, the first wave of machines will arrive ... 30 units.

I could be picking hairs here, but so far the lack of testing, failure to get to grips with social distancing and slow uptake on shutting bars/restaurants/social gathering facilities all hint to enforce the herd immunity. In the run up to B***it, you couldn’t move for Govt adverts in print, radio and billboard, spending £100m on advertising shooting ourselves in the foot ... has their been an equivalent on Covid?

Thanks, Mr.D. I agree with most of that. Mind you the Germans are being pretty secretive about some of their stuff. The Trouble with politicians is that they're politicians and in the daily briefing they don't answer the fucking question.

That’s their MO, I’m reasonably certain that I’d be appalled if it was a different party in govt and handling it with such disdain.

The front pages are speaking volumes at the moment. You know it’s a dire situation when even the fucking Daily Mail is on the Govt’s back.

All they're doing in my neck is posh arty farty deliveries of hummus and coriander or guacamole with vegetable crisps a la Michael pink trousered train loving Portaloo .

As Mr Devereaux pointed out, the right-wing press are getting on the Government's back and about time too...they must all have chapped lips from kissing the Tories arse for so long.

Too bad that the Opposition so closely resembles my idiot cousin (a red setter) who is as thick as shit and spends all day biting his own tail.

Anyway...is there any truth in the rumour that our former PM has set up as a dominatrix in Bognor Regis? I'm sure that she has plenty of pent up anger to unleash on naughty boys <shudders>

Anyone else yearn to go for a bag of chips?

Nick, I know it’s been a long month (fuck me, feels like shops should be full of Christmas markdowns) ... but I’d forgotten our former pm meant that one! For a moment, thought Johnson has got a sideline.

Not quite former yet, I'm afraid. I'd hate to wish death upon anyone but it would be quite the irony if covid did kill him off. I have to say they daily briefings are often as depressing for the shit questions posed by the journalists as much as anything else. Very few actually put anyone on the spot. I'm guessing they've been limited in what they can actually ask for now, but asking "when are we going to get out" every day isn't going to magically get a different answer.

Pol your artsy deliveries sound very... Nutritious? My cupboard has never had so many snacks in it at the one time, ever. And not the hummous and batons kind. Some British classic biscuits and a bunch of plastic sweets that would definitely survive the apocalypse better than us.

Meanwhile the neighbourhood has gone seemingly started up a bartering system for eggs grow your own veg and art supplies for the kids. The highest value item seems to be plain flour. It's very surreal.

Art supplies? I’ve got a few tubes of acrylic paints and canvases. I’ve just read an article about hand sanitiser and thought ‘interesting’. What’s happening?!

I live close to a local park and people are still coming and going as before. Only real slow down is on the neighbouring main road.

With Johnson, it would be a cold, cold irony but a sad one. I don’t wish that on anyone, even the fucker Cummings. I typed my post out in the early hours and didn’t make the point clear that I had forgotten we had May as PM! Sorry.

Do I get bonus points for drinking several cups of tea?

I’ve got lavender plants to repot that have survived winter. Not got round to it yet, have to find out the compost.

God yes and I don't even eat them normally! Fat, squidgy ones, in paper with salt and dripping with vinegar ...... if the chippy opens it can lead me into temptation.

Is your chippy currently shut?

Best chips I had recently were on the harbour at Oban waiting for the ferry to Mull. Exactly as you describe, Cherry. Gorgeous.

The seagulls there are a bit keen on helping you eat them, though

Yes, I've got several close by and not one of them is open. I could walk over hot coals for a bag of them now.

I love Scotland, no better place to fight off seagulls, least you get a good view.

Last "real" fish and chips I've had were on the harbour at Oban as well. Beautiful mid May day almost two years ago now. Would be happy to relive that day.

Oh, how lovely! I adore that there's somewhere in the world where we've both been and where we did the same thing  That makes me feel quite tingly!

Did you get to any of the islands too?

Unfortunately not. We visited Inverness, Skye (day trip), Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Loch Lomand/Oban (day trip). We got to Speyside, but couldn't swing Islay. I love Scotland.

I think it's lovely as well.
It got me thinking of other places at which we may have done the same thing. Let's see...how about eating gelato at the Trevi Fountain? :cattail:
