If anything Obama and the Dems have compromised far too much and gotten very little in return. We got a mandate, not Universal Health Care, not a Public Option. Obama didn't raise taxes until way later than he should have. The Stimulus program which should have been money dumped on the economy up to and including paying people to do the goddamn Macarena if we couldn't find something constructive for them to do was roughly thirty percent tax breaks. Gitmo remains open and trials were not done in New York and Obama didn't even put up a real fight on the subject. I'd say he compromised on how to deal with things like Syria but I'm pretty sure when it comes to should we or shouldn't we get involved with the Middle East the Republicans want whatever Obama doesn't. I really want him to say that Apple Pie and Baseball are all American just so I can see how long it takes for Ted Cruz to find out that Apple Pie was actually developed by Germans and Baseball is decended from a Mexican sport that involved decapitating prisoners from opposing tribes.

This, of course, is the greatest thing about America: the system is set up so that no leader has the power to really fuck us up all by himself. I think there have been better and worse than our current President, but even if you think he's the worst President ever, the Constitution keeps him in a little box that prevents him from doing too much harm.

I'm not sure I would describe it as a great thing. It prevents them from doing much good either. We'd probably be better off simply eliminating the office entirely an adopting something similar to Australia (I think it is) where we just vote for what party we want in charge and they choose from amongst themselves whos going to be the figurehead.

There is of course a huge difference between the doomsday prophets of Bush and Obama. When prophets claimed Bush was going to do all sorts of madness everybody called them stupid. The Left didn't humor the people who thought 9/11 was an inside job for example. The Right quite happily went along with the idea that Obama was a foreigner.
