Usernames are a phenomenon I find extremely interesting. Whether they belong to someone in registered form or exist only as ideas in our heads, usernames are a trip.

In this thread, I would like to hear more about usernames. All the way from individual names to entire genre's of names.

I often enjoy browsing the MEMBERS LIST sorted by date joined to check out all of the names that people come up with. I have even added people without posts to my buddy list and noticed they never post! What is this, a form of username-squatting?

In anycase, I thought this might be a fun thread.

For instance, there was this fellow here:

controller

As you can see, he registered, never posted, and there you have it.

I mean, like.... is it me, or what?

I just don't get all the names with the numbers behind them. SD412's name comes to mind, or Tabby 432. I mean really, were there 431 Tabby's before her? :)

That's really a pet peeve of mine, mon. All these aol'ers with strings of numbers trailing their SN's. Where's the originality? I mean for Christ's sake(Praise He Who Created All) pick up a fucking book or watch an old movie...There's sure to be a name more original the SexyGirl22847028376348.

Not that I can speak when I'm aping AmishPope, but that's just funny.

Actually Lavy - I think I can explain that. People will often use a number that means something to them than just upping it by one till they find an unused one.

I've been to sites where I've tried myname1, myname2, myname3 - etc, etc, etc... finally you get frustrated and just pick a number - sometimes one that means something, sometimes a high random # that you hope will work because you're tired of trying to find a name that hasn't been taken.

Once you've done that at one site people will sometimes just use the same name at the next site they go to so Tabby432 is always and everywhere Tabby 432.

Maybe they want us to know their area code... but with SD412 I kinda doubt he'd want that much personal info in public.

Maybe I'll change mine to RH90210 just to join in the fun!

Dillinger,

Do you think I really wanted an explanation? Do you think I really give a shit why they use numbers. No. I just wanted to bitch because that's what I do well. :p

But, thank you all the same. :)

*lol* I can be much too literal sometimes... my apologies.

Maybe I should just change my name to Dillinger2830927423?

I've ended up with my name here mis-spelt because I'd signed on too hastily and it pisses me off. I'll just keep it now, but freescotfr is my yahoo name. Never go on Yahoo but rarely.

MSN chat name was suggested to me my MSN and for some reason I kept it - but rarely go on chat - its BrushedMacpapa.

Add that to your list, Riff.

WARNING! Going to be literal again...

Did you happen to check to see if he has any stories?

Lots of people register but never post - however they do submit stories.

Maybe he/she just lurks and PMs people?

Who knows...

Interesting Notes:

There are 8 pages of "Master" names and 3 pages of "Mistress" ones...

BTW - what DOES your name mean?

Well, I won't put words in his mouth, but Problem Child remarks something about names that begin with "clit" and so on and so forth. I find such names amusing too.

I will never forget the first time I chatted at Bianca's Smutshack, there was a dude called "Anal Man."

I saw that and laughed my ass off. I mean we have Cro-Magnon Man, Java Man, Neandertal Man, and the 20th Century gave us Anal Man.

LOL

Honest, I never considered that! I am not a huge reader here of stories- no slight against the writers. I have read some that I have liked some I haven't, but I digress.

Hmmmmm.... to read stories based on the name of the author vrs the title or genre of the story? Interesting. Could be a worthy pursuit.

Never considered the PM theory either, but that would certainly seem plausible.

Personally, I love it when you find a reference to something obscure-ish that you love, like MissWashu, CalvinoFan, AlmaPersona, GullyFoyle, or somesuch thing. All of a sudden, you have an immediate in-joke.

A pet peeve is when you sign up on something new and the username that you always use is taken. Mine is pretty middle-of-the-road, in terms of obscurity; it's two dictionary words, but their connection is tenuous at best. Usually I find I can sign up as TheSpaceToast, if plan A fails-

Holy WOW! You started your net chat existence at Bianca's? How long ago? That was the first adult chat site I'd ever gone to - 10 years ago now - maybe longer.

The name I used there was Aleister.

Spacetoast. An enviable name! You could be a complete ass like the rest of us, but I like the name!

Yes I hate it when my name is taken too. I feel luck I was able to get "riff."

I was registered here since May of last year and didn't even realize the BB was here. I just came to write and chat<although you have to register seperately for that, which I didn't know before I registered>

some of the names are really good. I like the more imaginative ones<obviously mine doesn't fall into this category, but it was the first name I ever had in any chat>

I've been known to register then forget my password. When I return and request a password reminder, the email address they send it to would be defunct, and I have to re-register as phrodeau2K or something. In one case, I was unable to access one of my bank accounts, because only one username could access any account, and I couldn't recover the password.

Here is an original one: AssMaster

One post, one post only. Not to mention, today is his birthday!

Hillary

Here's one that blew me away. I just popped back on at the main level of the BB, and found this message: "Welcome to our newest member, Hillary".

There was no "Hillary" on Lit, previous to today. This just blows me away. Growing up, I had both a Hillary and a Hilary in my class.

You know what? Let's all send Hillary a nice private message, welcoming her to Lit. Okay, I'm not sure we can do that yet. She hasn't posted anything. But I'm with you, riff; this one's going right on my buddy list, sight unseen-

Anything with "playa" in it would probably drive me nuts. I did a search and found 14 playaz with a total of 2 posts across the board.

Articulate crowd, I must say....
