Anyone fancy a variant on the 750 word challenge - to create a story wrapped into exactly 2025 words centred on the shift between 2024 into 2025?

Could be someone taking a critical view of their life as one year passes over, to the next, shenanigans centred around a New Year's party or just a nice good old piece of romance.

Anyone feel it's worth putting some petrol(gas!) into this challenge to get it going - run between say 31st December to 31st January? Or is it better to just pour the petrol on the idea? 🤔

It's not a bad idea. It would have to be sort of unofficial, run from this thread and folks can participate if they want and then post their story in this thread.

Could be interesting but my question is whether there will be a plain old 750 word challenge or not.

Hate to rain on a good parade but I don’t think this is a fair challenge.

The 750-word one works because it’s an exceedingly short limit, shorter than virtually anything that what passes for a short story even in serious literary circles. It’s equally challenging for everyone to fit within this limit, and it produces pieces you wouldn’t see otherwise.

But 2k words is different. It’s long enough to allow for all elements of a story to be present, and accordingly there are many authors for whom this is their usual length. For those authors, the exercise is thus reduced to “write a regular story about New Year’s Eve, then fiddle with phrasing here and there to make it hit the mark.”

In other words, for some people it’ll be just another themed challenge, the length limit being largely inconsequential, while others will struggle to fit it.

And yes, my objections may have something to do with the fact that the absolute shortest story I published here is in the excess of 7k words ;)

This one's a hard nut to crack! the 750 word challenge was fairly straightforward to crack, but 2025 words is.....challenging. Nearly there, hopefully help is at hand!

Does sound like a cool little challenge. Lets see what me inspirations lead me. 2025 words is arond 3 pages in my format so as someone already stated a plot might emerge. Going to see if I can come up with a weird one :)

Sorry, no. Premise is too broad to really marshal the bunnies to build a story. Really would do better with a more precise ask

Done! It was quite a task to try and find the balance beyond a 750 worder and, by my usual works, but with some help hit 2025 words on the dot.
