Is there an established unwritten procedure for when threads hit 5,000 posts? Does the thread starter typically wish to start the new replacement thread or does it go to the lucky 5,000th to comment?

Good question. Most people tend to wait for the original thread starter to start a new one, but there is no rule. I've written a new one from an older thread that I did not start. Others have to. There's definitely no rule about when to start a new thread. The "limit" is 5,000, as you say. But some threads haven't been officially blitzed until they've reached over 6,000 posts. But most people try to start a new one shortly after 5,000.

Etiquette used to be the person who started it, is given the chance to start the next one. Lately, I've seen people race to be the one to start the next one. it feels more like "I need to be the one with the most threads" you see 3 threads with the same name because 5 people wanted to start the next one.

I don't think it's worth your time to worry about it. I think posters can police that themselves. Many of them are on their 6th or 7th version and the original poster has moved on. Your job is tough enough. Don't make it harder. The overtime pay definitely isn't worth it. 😁

Oh, it wouldn’t take much more time than just letting it roll. The most time consuming thing to fix the thread when it’s been open well past 5000. I was more curious about the trend on this forum than anything else. The GB gets super competitive as their Iso thread approaches 5000 posts and it can be fun to watch or be part of that, but the feel is different with threads that people really own (for lack of a better word).

Does the GB not have an age requirement? šŸ˜„

Check with Mom ... or Manu.

It's a server load thing. The iteration of VBulletin used to have a problem with loading the servers down trying to sort through too many posts on a thread. The change to a 5K limit I believe was recommended by VBulletin Support. Some years back, you'd see Mom close the threads herself with a note about it ... 'To alleviate excess load on servers this thread is now closed and a new one has been started .... ' or some such.

Here's one example: https://forum.literotica.com/showpost.php?p=91514111&postcount=4999

I know how it works and why, just anticipating that it’s going to happen much more frequently here than in the BDSM or How To forums and inquiring about the board norms regarding the sequel threads. I think I have a handle on how to proceed. :)

Yeah, I created the ABC 10 letters thread and the Something That Will Kill You thread, and they got swiped once they hit 5,000. That’s why I put ā€œY’sā€ with Lyrics Emporium

I'd love to see it all go back to the old practice of once the moderator ends the thread then that's when it gets renewed. Now you've got people starting the renewed thread as soon as the old one hits 5k.

If it's going to be a free for all then let the games begin after the moderator does her thing.
