I wish we could post polls. The inserted quoted posts are the most recent I’ve seen regarding the post limits of yore. I think there is some interest in possibly returning to that practice in the PG. Let me know what you think in the comments on this thread.
I think a big part of the clique issue is threads no longer being limited to 5,000 posts. Thus you have threads with thousands of pages, often with a relatively small numbers of participants, that can give the impression of an in-group that dominates the board’s flow. Even with the thread limit, there were in-groups too. What more often happens is that people eventually drop off or fade into the background (usually because of real life), to be replaced by new enthusiasts who are simpatico.

Above all, I believe people should Lit how they wish, even be a throuple,
as long as they don’t degrade or threaten others. Actually, above that “above all,” Lit is optional. If it’s not doing it for you, take a break or leave totally.

I agree with you.
Part of me misses the charm that came with thread length limitations. We all moved a little slower because there were no notifications either.

Bring them back. But that would create a lot of work for you, and really I just want my original Meme thread back. 🤣

@ydahecnot brought me here...but I'd be on board with post limits.

Also, I'd be on board with post limits for certain people. You get to 10,000 posts as a user, you're banned. Use them wisely.
Would that ban be retroactive? Asking for a few thousand friends

We might need a scientific approach to what the number should be, but yep, you hit it and you're done.

You can all thank me for my contributions to Lit at a later date. When you're all banned and I'm at 900 posts.

I had a brother who was given a daily question ration 🤭🤣😎

My parents were kind of bad ass

He's gonna need a lot of therapy for that I'm sure

Ooh, you're gonna piss off Sex and Shenanigans if this happens.

I would pay good money to see that
Nah, not pissed off, I just respectfully disagree. Feels arbitrary, unnecessary and just a rule to have a rule. I’m typically against pointless rules in general.

There was a very good reason for that limit.
I'm speculating of course, but I think that was a huge catalyst for Manu to find a new platform. The performance issues that were caused by bloated threads required a lot of maintenance.

Now it's just vindictive glee about ruining people's plans to get a post count as high as possible. I see that pride y'all have when it's a particularly active day and the evil villain in me wants to play

Rationale has been explained. You don’t have to agree. For the record, the board began with no limits, but the board kept crashing, so the 5,000 limit was set. It was lifted when we got the new software about three years ago.

Or, what Aussie said

Yeah, it was a technical issue at the time, that has since been solved. So I agree, there was a functional performance reason in the past, but that doesn’t exist anymore.

Yeah, so the rationale appears to be “I don’t like what other people are doing so I want to put a rule on them.”

Your rationale sounds similar to arguments I used to hear against gay marriage.

I mean, is there a particular attraction to a thread going thousands and thousands of pages? If my current Emporium thread ever reaches 5,000 posts, I am ending it and starting a new one

Yeah, people are having fun and enjoying it, and it harms no one.

So would you enjoy it less at 5,000 posts? I have explained why having megathreads can be daunting
If a thread is daunting, don’t join it. Yes, it would be annoying to reset a thread for no good reason at 5,000 posts.
