Anime!

I just started watching the original Dragonball series on Hulu. This is the uncut Japanese version with subtitles, not the edited for American television dubbed version. I remember watching the dubbed version on Toonami in the early 2000s but never got too far into it. Reading subtitles isn't something that I enjoy, but I love seeing the original editions of Japanese shows after seeing what the American versions were like.

In the past year, I've gone back and watched the Super Sentai versions of what was used for seasons 1 through 3 of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. The comparison of the original to the MMPR was quite interesting, especially from the story narrative stand point.

I think of Dragon Ball as "the adventures of Bulma and her annoying monkey sidekick." ;)

It's wild seeing Yamcha portrayed as a sexy, dangerous bandit and not a pathetic scrub.

Black Lagoon, cowboy Bebop, Afro Samurai, inuyasha, Hunter x Hunter, lots of good material to peruse. I love One Piece, but I'm so tired of the episodes getting draaaaaaaaaaagged tf out.

Been a long time anime watcher. Here's some top picks:

Older stuff:
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Cowboy Bebop
Trigun
Patlabor
Macross Plus
Vampire Hunter D
Records of Lodoss War

Newer Stuff:
One Punch Man
Chainsaw Man
Haven't You Heard, I'm Sakamoto!
The Disastorous Life of Saiki K
Bloom Into You
Trigun is fucking brilliant! I've watched it so many times. Vampire Hunter D is also brilliant. I gave Hubby a D model nearly 20 years ago. He took it out of the box! 😱

Like many people here, I started with Dragonball Z. Went through a phase of things like Trigun, Hellsing, and Vampire Hunter D. I love every single Ghibli movie. Howls Moving Castle is my favourite, followed by Spirited Away.
Recently I had The Dragon Prince recommended to me. It might be for kids, but it's awesome!

All the love for Howl's! My favorite as well. But I love Miyazaki films. Have a soot sprite tat on my ankle. I'm old, so my first taste of anime was Robotech/Macross, followed a few years later with Akira and Ranma 1/2. I fell out of the loop for a decade or so because the market got flooded with too much cheaper work, but I'm wandering back in to more new series.

I already started a separate thread about it, but the new live-action On Piece is amazing! And it’s been renewed for a second season, so live action Tony Tony Chopper is going to happen!

I forgot about Akira! And I'm now remembering my very first exposure to anime was basically tentacle porn. I was 14 and was fucking spun out.
However, I love animation in general so it didn't take me long to start enjoying the style. I also fell out of keeping up with anime. But I want to watch the newer Hellsing.

While I did get exposure to the early 80's stuff on TV, the first piece of anime that really hooked me was "Ninja Scrolls" (wow, I haven't watched that one in a long time!). I also love the original "Ghost in the shell". Weirdly (and somewhat blasphemously) I didn't like "Akira" all that much. (I know, I know, I'll hand in my anime appreciation group membership on my way out). "Black Butler" isn't too bad, and I watched most of "7 Deadly Sins" before becoming a tad bored with it. I watched the first episode of "Death Note" a little while ago, and for some reason didn't go looking for the next episode.
I do like the "Way of the house husband" books and cartoons, though. Probably because I was one for a while. LOL

I love the new Netflix series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. It’s nice to hear the familiar voices from the Scott Pilgrim vs The World movie cast. Good animation and action and funny dialogue. Lots of fighting. Ramona hair keeps changing colors. The League of Evil Exes is back. Good stuff. I’d recommend. šŸ‘

I loved the live-action movie and the original comic. I've had high hopes for the new animated series. I'll check it out!

I’m really enjoying Delicious in Dungeon (which is a stupid title) on Netflix.

Beautifully animated, charming characters, clever premise. (It follows a party of fantasy adventurers exploring a dungeon and surviving by cooking the monsters they kill. The fun is the creative way the underground ecosystem is presented, and when their guide demonstrates unexpected ways to cook monster that should be inedible.)

Grew up with only basic cable, but I was able to watch a few late night anime (more mature stuff than the Saturday morning Voltron, Transformers, Gachamon redubs).
I always wanted to get the Robotech series, and when I did... kinda disappointed.
Some faves:
Princess Mononoke
Cowboy Bebop
Wicked City (this one got me hooked; its amazing)
Attack/Titan is a new one for me
Ruroni Kenshin (first half of the series at least)
FMA, Brotherhood.

Those are what comes to mind

Some good recommendations here. quite a few among them I liked.

But two of my most fav are
Initial D
Hajime No Ippo

I actually got introduced to anime when I first saw live action of Initial D.

I tried to watch it once. Ten minutes in, I was sobbing uncontrollably.
I just looked at the trailer and read through the Wiki summary. I agree. Brutal.

I’m not a connoisseur, but I’ve enjoyed some of the Studio Ghibli movies, as well as Cowboy Bebop.

I thought that Ranma ½ was clever and pretty funny. Great if you are looking for something light-hearted.

Ranma 1/2, an Anime YEARS Ahead of It's Time

Great video! I'd never thought deeply about how subversive Ranma is about gender but he's totally right.

Ranma 1/2 was one of the first animes I fell in love with. I audibly giggled when he got to Ryoga and Pichan! I still think of Ukyo when I have Okonomiyaki.

Sadly, I just learned that Akira Toriyama, the creator of Dragonball, has died.

He was only 68.

My daughters partner reads Manga comics. I don't know much about them, but an adult woman reading comics is endearing.
