Now the authorities are saying that many of the ADHD drugs have serious long-term side effects, including (uncommon) rare effects that can be life-threatening over the long term.
There are several cases in Australia where 10+ years on certain medications has meant a death sentence for the kids who take them.
Are we too dependent on these meds? Is there another way to deal with an over-active child?
Many yrs ago, all of my kids were diagnosed ADD and ADHD by a peadiatrician. I refused point-blank to medicate my children, and instead used diet and lifestyle changes to help modify their behaviour.
Yes - it took a hell of a lot of work. I almost had to spend 24/7 with them to monitor and supervise their activity. But it worked..... I tired them out so thoroughly every day that they didn't have the energy left to be disruptive any more.
It worked for me.
I know this approach won't necessarily work for everyone else. But surely, there has to be options apart from drugging kids into a stupor with what's now been shown to be somewhat harmfull medication?
