I have to say that I understand most versions of English. But I never owned a car with a bonnet. And as far as I know, I've never seen any knickers. I have owned American automobiles, but they don't have bonnets, and I've seen my share of ladies undies, like panties and such.

My original comment to starrk was that she was writing a story set in America, and an American audience would probably like to see American English in that setting. It's no big thing. Most Americans can read metre as well as they can meter. But if the story characters, who are supposed to be Americans start measuring in meteres or metres instead of yards, miles, etc. a lot of readers are going to be a little confused. Starrk didn't do that, but I added it as an example.

Starrk left a bit of Aussie English in her story, like 'favourite' (the unpronounced 'u'), and missed one reference to knickers, and I teased her about it. I didn't mean to start a lengthy conversation about it. I hope starrk took my comment as a lighthearted, tongue-in-cheek, jab, and I think she did.
