2024 First Presidential Debate Thread: June 27th

I was going to argue this point, because there's no way anyone would laughably claim Biden is 'sharp as a tack', especially after last night's performance.

But I took a step back, and realized that yes, from the perspective of a leftist/democrat such as yourself, Biden is sharp as a tack. Arguably Biden may appear to be an intellectual giant in your eyes.

So I stand corrected. When you claim Biden is 'sharp as a tack', you actually honestly believe it.
President Biden is competent and honest and gets things done. Donald Trump is an incompetent crook. The fact the you still support Trump after last night’s debacle says a lot about your character.

Just like your people are so quick to point out numbers..if there were many, many lies for one side… the Convict in chief had…many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many lies.

Joe’s were mostly errors in numbers, where as “good people on both sides” had the lionshare.

(this is the part where he talked about your…. Cousins?)

I have no doubt whatsoever you actually believe that.

Biden is speaking at a rally in Raleigh, NC right now and sounds strong and vigorous and has his voice back. Where was this Joe last night? A real 180.

could be that he was still too sick last night to perform well—anti-biotics take time to kick in, if he was being treated with them—but both he and his team decided it was better to send out a 'weak' Joe than not turn up at all... which would have given magats an even bigger boost.

Could be. But he’s on point today showing some DBE!

Also, about his slack jaw look last night, I wonder if he did have cold if his nose was stuffed up.

Now play the part where the same fact-checker inhaled deeply and blew through more than thirty lies that Trump told.

Please play the tape for both sides of the commentary.

Otherwise, you game the news and are biased and lie like Trump does.
I haven’t audited the fact checkers or counted how many lies each candidate told so I won’t argue your point. In fact I’ll bolster it by suggesting that not all of Biden’s incorrect statements were deliberate lies. For example, when he said he decided to run for office after his son died in Iraq, I don’t think he deliberately intended for the audience to believe Beau died in Iraq. I think he was just confused. He had similar trouble remembering when his son died during his deposition.

Joe Biden Sees Strongest Grassroots Fundraising Hour Since Campaign Launched After Muffled Debate Performance

President Joe Biden's 2024 campaign continued pulling in donations after he struggled to fend off Donald Trump's attacks during the first presidential debate on Thursday, June 27.

According to a Biden-Harris campaign official, the hour that followed the debate marked the president's best grassroots fundraising hour since he launched his bid for reelection

Define "better choice". A shit sandwich on white or wheat is still a shit sandwich. Non of the above or any other candidate is an option, check the ballot for the latter option. People saying there is only two optiins is why the uniparty runs people like this. We are fucked either way, but deep down you must know that.
You have options. The whole foundation of your country maybe at stake. Choose wisely.

There is no "uniparty". The Republicans and Democrats are as different as night and day.

Conservatives like to pretend they're the same because what the Republicans stand for is indefensible. Deep down you know that.

I am saddened that these two fucking douche bags are our options.

Jesus Christ… THIS is the best America can fucking do?

But I tend to get my news from the best and most objective source…

I think the sad part is that some people seem to think one of these two is still their actual choice outside of "not the other guy"

I say that even though I will be voting for one.(Because not that one)...but in the end, our country is broken if these douches are our choices.

And no, this is not a "both sides" argument.

I absolutely favor one douche over the other by a huge measure because I prefer.democracy.

Joe fucked up the debate. Royally.

I'm not going to make excuses for that bad performance - off day, head cold, over prepared blah blah. Whatever.

So how much is debate a part of the job of presidency?

I want a president who is able to get things accomplished, to get legislation passed, who can work with people to get things done, who finds way to get things through. That's Biden. That hasn't changed.

Trump was forceful, enunciated clearly. Projected his voice. Stood up straight. His makeup was even done more carefully than normal. And he lied more times than any other candidate in any other debate ever. He said things that were truly unhinged. People are still looking for something factual he said. As president, he never passed infrastructure, never brought forth an ACA replacement etc. He nominated judges to put a conservative super majority on the supreme court which has now upended our government. Roe/Dobbs, Chevron etc. And a massive tax give away which has added enormous debt.

Yeah Biden had a really fucked up off night. When I need to find a professional debater for a job I won't go looking for Biden. When I want a president who gets shit done - yeah, I'll look to Biden.

A-fucking-men to that ^.

President Biden has NEVER been a particularly polished speaker for one obvious reason: His stutter. Throw in an apparent cold, poor prep, and his age, and you see what you get.

Go back and watch his debate with Paul Ryan from years ago: Then Vice President Biden wasn’t particularly smooth at all. It’s just that Paul Ryan (and the Romney-Ryan platform) was so fucking ridiculous that Joe endlessly mocked him.

It’s always been about substance over style with Joe Biden: Working across the aisle and compromise.

That ^ has served him and the American people well over the last three and a half years.

More please. (If it was really just a cold, over preparation and one off night.)

👍

Biden didn't look good, but honestly there is very little about being president that debate skills really are important for. Trump looked better except he still constantly lied and there is a pretty good chunk of the job of president where being a pathological liar is very bad.
But he looked and did fine for the State of the Union (albeit reading off a teleprompter) and he's reported to be fiesty and glib today. So it's not a permanent anything at the moment. There's no denying he's already in his eighties and not getting younger, of course. And Trump isn't far behind him.

The question of whether he could run the country smoothly at his age gets the response that he is running the country pretty smoothly now--against an "approve nothing" opposition party and without suggesting anyone ingest bleach.

And there are no guarantees anyone alive would survive through the coming presidential term. Of all the backup possibilities, Harris is the only one actually being trained for the position, so her potentially getting the job doesn't give me any heartburn.

Whatever Joe Biden is as a man, it isn't a "douche." He's a decent, caring, experienced man. And anyone calling him a douche is a douche.

Ok, I'll give you that he's a caring man.

My word, douche, is meant to be about people unqualified to be our President at this point.

I need a better word.

Neither of these men deserve to be our President going forward. I'm voting for policy, not the man.

And I fucking hate that I am doing that.

I don't want this man to be my President. I don't want the other guy either.

Fuck them both.
