i just looked up how long it takes to defrost in the sink using cold water (because i couldn't remember. i usually just put it in the fridge for a day) and i accidentally found a guide to defrost it in hot water which i just don't know about. supposedly it takes 30 minutes. still, that just sounds wrong to me.

If it's electric then it's the element. 15/20 bucks. If you have two it's always best to do both at once. The hassle is in draining and especially if the sediment is bad cuz it'll be plugging the drain hole. Pain in the fucking ass.

electric, and perhaps more likely to be the element (or one of them, don't know about this tank)... the water started coming out burning hot and then, next day, just cold. from what i've read it sounds like a sediment build-up on the element leading to a burn-out. plus it was installed 16 years ago so it was living on borrowed time.
