My body is...ouch.

My neck is sore, my back is sore, my arms are sore -- even my bum hurts! And no, it's not from anal. This time.

I've been spending a lot of time out and about on my pushy and swimming lately and I've woken up this morning stiff and achey. Sore muscles. As you can imagine it makes getting out of bed really fricken hard.

I ride and swim most days, but if I get too sore I won't be able to, and I need to be able to because I'm helping to fundraise.

So I have a question. What can I do to minimise the aches and pains?

I'd like to hear from women in particular, but guys please if you have any tips jump in.

I warm up and down, and I drink lots of water and eat healthy. What else can I do?

If those aches are in your muscles then it could be a build up of lactic in them. You know if you run your thumb down the muscles and it hurts like hell? One trick I've borrowed from the pros is icy cold water on the muscles pretty soon after you exercise. Somehow the constriction "flushes" out the lactic and it does seem to work. You can use the shower head on your legs, but you may have seen the pros lowering themselves into a barrel of cold water.
The other point if you're doing lots of intensive training is to make sure you're giving your body sufficient recovery time. I'm not sure of your age but recovery takes longer with age - it's a no brainer.

Check out your diet to make sure you're putting the right fuel in. I don't know too much on nutrition but a quick google might bring up some food types that could make the problem worse. Generally you need carbs, because they are easy for your body to process and convert into awesome superwoman energy.

Go girl - but go smart too.

Oh! Are you using a heart rate monitor? Working your heart too hard can actually slow down your fitness program. You need to stay below an optimum rate for your age. Pushing the rate higher doesn't make you fitter any quicker and may be counter-productive, so that's worth looking into.

Good for you!!!!

I had to google cankers. Never heard of canker sores before in my life.

Well, at least now you know what all those things all over your body are that keep pumping out all that pus juice.

Have you ever thought about a leper colony?

Lots of stretching.
I mean doing stretching that isn't part of your warm-up/down. Do stretches while still in bed. Do them in the shower. Stretch randomly during your day.
Stickygirl is right about the build-up of lactic acid. Stretching helps improve circulation which helps remove that build-up

A general pain reliever also helps, like an aspirin/ibuprofen before you sleep.

Adding protein to your diet, especially post workout can also help.

Mostly, just pay attention to your body. Workout soreness is your muscles getting used to being used. You can push through that.

Actual pain is your body telling you that you're fucking something up. If doing whatever causes you pain, stop doing whatever and consult a health care professional.

Keep at it and good luck!

Wow! Thank you so much girlfriend! This is exactly the kind of helpful info I was after.

No, I'm not using a heart rate monitor. That's good to know, I'll check it out.

You seem really awesome. Thank you. :)

What about for my poor body? Massage?

:D

You might want to check "her" out for one of those icky dicky things you say scares you so much before you go to much further down that "Massage" road...

Just sayin'.

Tylenol is your friend.

No matter how active I am, the first hockey game will make it a chore for me to climb stairs due to aching legs the next day. And I'm only goal tending. I think the semi squat position is hard on legs.

Getting older is a big issue. If I am swinging a shovel everyday it is okay but give me a week off from that task and I have a few aches the next day.

Drink lots of water, that flushes out the lactic acid. Stretches! Don't stop what you're doing because that stiffening will take longer to release. Hot tub or hot bath! I'm in my daily, sometimes I fall asleep in it. If you're prone to cramps make sure your water and potassium intake is high.

Massage!

I'll echo stickygirl's comments on lactic acid. You mentioned you warm-up, but be sure to 'cool down'. This will help prevent that lactic acid build up in the muscles.

If you've just come out of a hard swim or strong bike ride, take some time to cool down with some easy swimming or easy cycling to allow time for your muscles to flush some lactic acid.

Also, be sure to listen to your body. Fatigue and aches can be your body telling you it is time to allow for some recovery. Rest, fluids, and maybe a good soak in an epsom bath.

Good luck!

"Stretch randomly during your day." That sounds fun actually. I'm picturing lots of fun stretching. :D

So stretch lots and lots, protein after, pain relief before bed and achey muscles are all good.

Thanks mate. Appreciate you coming here and giving me good tips. Unlike Eyer who is trolling. Wtf Eyer, can't you just PM me if you wanna chat? :D

1SB,
It's been awhile, how've you been? Keeping well?

:D

I don't need to check her for anything. Stickygirl is awesome and just minding her own damn business. Unlike you. If anyone needs a check up it's you. Frothy mouth mofo.

Sorry Stickygirl. Eyer can be a real asshole sometimes, but I love ya! :)

I'll ask at the pharmacy. Thanks Rom

You need warm epsom salt soaks and make sure you are getting enough magnesium. :rose:

Bath bomb. Ooh yes! :)

I'd let you massage me just saying.

Nice freakin' av by the way! Yum.

Thank you :)

Cheers Em, that's solid advice right there. Thanks mate!

Staying hydrated is huge. I never drink enough water.

Whats a "Pushy?"

You're getting older G/S As simple as that.

Pushbike mate.

Well I'm certainly not getting any younger, champ.

Young people get sore too, genius.

Are your boobs sore too? Let's start with your butt, I know that's sore.

What's a push bike, and why aren't you pedaling instead of pushing it?
