Conservatives Remain the Largest Ideological Group in U.S.

George W. Bush called himself a "compassionate conservative" in order to distance himself from "those" conservatives...

Do you forget history much?

...

U_D, you're even funnier; you forgot Clinton was the Sec State...

I just love being lectured to by graduates of the fourth grade.

You realize that I'm not claiming W was a conservative, right?

How do you think he would have responded to the poll?

This is a point I've tried to make before, but you don't have to take my word for it: just look at reality. In a country where self-described conservatives outnumber self-described liberals by about 2-to-1, the more liberal of the two parties controls the Senate and has won the popular vote in 4 of the last 5 presidential elections.

There are only three ways you can reconcile these facts: One, conservatives are much more numerous but are for some reason much less likely than liberals to vote (I don't think anyone buys this unless you're a "voter fraud" paranoid); two, most of the people who call themselves moderate in practice almost always vote for Democrats; three ( and this is related to #2), conservatives aren't shy about proclaiming themselves as such, to the extent that even other conservatives can look at a Dubya and go "no, he wasn't really one of us," but there are social and political pressures in America that make it difficult to stand up and admit you're a liberal. Think about it: when was the last time you heard a politician claim "Yes, I truly am a liberal!" and liberal groups denying it?

So I think what you have is a country where people who are 1% right-of-center happily will call themselves conservatives because they want to sit at the popular kids' table; but those who are 1% left-of-center, or even 50% left-of-center (someone like Obama), are more likely to cling to "moderate" because it's more socially acceptable.

This is a good post.

I don't really have a dog in the fight as to whether the US is a primarily conservative nation or not. I could give a shit. What I'm questioning is the validity of a poll that's based on people self-labeling. And you did a much better job of that with that post than I apparently have elsewhere in the thread.

I know I'm not the only one that notices when A_J is losing an argument, he immediately goes into "ad hominem" mode.

It's like his favorite phrase. He even invented one, what he calls "ad hominem by class," which appears in no text of logic anywhere that I've been able to find, yet he continues to use it regularly.

And when he commits the fallacy and it's pointed out to him, his inevitable response is "it's not ad hominem if it's true."

Which is false. The ad hominem fallacy is still a fallacy even if the statement made about the person is a true one.

"The Unabomber says smoking crack is bad for you."

"That can't be true, because the guy who said it is the Unabomber ."

Uh huh.

It's like he gets a nervous tick and that's the result. People like that crack me up - always trying to be the smartest guy in the room. Say what you need to say, if you can say it a little more eloquently, go for it. But at least know the meaning of the words and phrases you are using, ffs.

Will you guys at least try to make sense?

So what? My point is that on Lit we don't label ourselves, we get labelled by others. Which is exactly what you just did. See?

Why even post something this dumb? How about you pick a famous conservative thinker, respected by nearly all conservatives (too bad Buckley is dead; he would have been perfect), and an equivalent liberal, and let them write the touchstone questions for their own tribe?

Do you even understand what I'm saying?

Obviously, they don't. I think you're definitely going to have to drop it down a few more notches. Pictures might not be a bad idea either. :D

As near as I can tell, "ad hominem by class" equates to "criticizing those people/positions I agree with politically".

It's an oversimplification.

Consider this exchange:

Conservitard: Clinton was president when 9/11 happened.
Librul: Actually George W. Bush was inaugurated on 1/21/2001, so Bush was president on 9/11....
Conservitard: La, la, la I can't hear you! (louder) Clinton was president when 9/11 happened!
Librul: Are you stupid?
Conservitard: Ad Hominem! Ad Hominem! Mommmmmmmmm!

If you look at the above exchange, note that the conservitard made an erroneous statement. The liberal proved that the conservitard made an erroneous statement. The conservitard repeated his/her position. When the librul asked if the conservitard was stupid, this was NOT an ad hominem attack. It perfectly logical to inquire about mental status when someone continues to insists on disproven facts.

Still banging that drum? What evidence do you have that I ever posted personal information about you?

None. Zero. Nada.

You and your alts invented the whole thing. We both know it -just like everyone on Lit knows you're a sad, bitter, hate-filled little man...a negative attention whore who will say anything to get other people to acknowledge your existence. You've decided the best way to accomplish that is behaving like a flaming asshole, spew lies, and play the victim card to garner sympathy. How pathetic.

Your miserable life is a you problem. Trying to offload your misery to lighten the burden ain't gonna work.

Don't you just love it when liberals define conservatism? Remember Carroll O'Conner? He played a conservative like only a liberal could.:D

Jesus Christ, Zip. Am I reading that right? Help. I feel like I've gone through a looking glass or something.

I'm certain you're right about ahbc. That's all it ever meant.

I agree, which is exactly why my post about fourth grade isn't ad hominem. Vette apparently needs it further simplified, since he's still posting as if he thinks I'm trying to define "conservative."

You're stupid or worse if you think Rome fell, or changed Republic for Empire, from any cause bearing any resemblance to anything American RWs complain about today.

I didn't say they did. I didn't say they were left or right or in-between. I said they're gone.
For fucks sake you people are dense.

Poll question asking guy: Are you a liberal or a conservative?
George McGovern: Conservative.

PQAG: Are you a liberal or a conservative?
Barney Frank: Conservative.

PQAG: (same question)
GWBush: Conservative.

PQAG: same
Nancy Pelosi: Conservative.

PQAG: same
William Buckley: (snickers, pours another scotch) I have to say, that although the term has been unfortunately skewed in recent decades and is now all but interchangeable with "socialist," I am a true liberal.

Vetteman: 4 out of 5 Americans are conservatives! How dare anyone question their self-assessment?

I sure LT, UD, And RubDownSow are all Googling "Enuresis" as we speak.

Conservatives Remain the Largest Ideological Group in U.S.

PRINCETON, NJ -- Political ideology in the U.S. held steady in 2011, with 40% of Americans continuing to describe their views as conservative, 35% as moderate, and 21% as liberal. This marks the third straight year that conservatives have outnumbered moderates, after more than a decade in which moderates mainly tied or outnumbered conservatives.

While the header for the article that vette posted is all very interesting, the conclusion for the poll should also be taken into consideration.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bottom Line

Sizable segments of Americans identify with each of the three major ideological groups on the U.S. political spectrum; however, in recent years, conservatives have become the single largest group, consistently outnumbering moderates since 2009 and outnumbering liberals by 2-to-1.

Overall, the nation has grown more ideologically polarized over the past decade, with the percentage of moderates declining from 40% to 35% and the percentages of conservatives and liberals each rising. The increase in the proportion of conservatives is entirely the result of increased conservatism among Republicans and independents, and is also seen in Americans 30 and older -- particularly seniors. The increase in the proportion of liberals is seen exclusively among Democrats as well as in all age groups.

At the same time these shifts have occurred, Americans' party affiliation has tended to skew more Democratic than Republican, although in 2010 and 2011, the parties were about equal when the leanings of independents are taken into account.

Okay folks, I found a thread where MilesBenZonah posted personal information about my family.

HERE is a post where MilesBenZonah copy-and-pasted information about my late father-in-law (who was a school board member) and my children from another forum. I asked Laurel to delete this post and she did.

MilesBenZonah claims that doesn't prove anything because the information was deleted.

...but look further down the thread.
Scroll down to post #80, you will see MilesBenZonah' buddy Vettefag agreeing with MilesBenZonah and mocking male school board members.

Scroll down to post #83 and you'll see my buddy LT quoting the deleted information (which was removed) and agreeing with the substance of the cut-and-paste of my words which MilesBenZonah posted.

Bottom line: MilesBenZonah will post personal information about the family of anyone he disagrees with politically, and then claim that he doesn't.

Fuck you MilesBenZonah.
