Victor Davis Hanson on Joe Biden's Racialism

English has been the predominant language for the United States pretty much since its inception. There were attempts to pass a law declaring english our official language but having inept legislative bodies they failed. Up until 2018 there wasn't a dire need to protect it. Unfortunately with the uncontrolled migration illegal and overextended legal migration that's no longer the case. There is an effort by progressive globalist to surrender our nation status to the world. A country without borders is not a country at all.
There's no reason to have a national language. I speak English...most of the world speaks English as, at the very least, a second language.

Fun fact, languages don't have borders. Though maybe Mexico will pay for language walls for ya.

The EU has a list of official national languages in which official documents have to be produced. President Macron wanted to remove English as an EU national language after Brexit. The Irish (and Maltese) objected, even though Irish Gaelic and Maltese are on the list. Other countries also objected because English is the most spoken second language in most EU countries.

In the UK, Welsh and Scots Gaelic are also official languages. The proposal to include Irish Gaelic in Nothern Ireland has been contentious. The Cornish have very few native speakers of Cornish but they ant Cornish to be official too.

In India, English is the language of wider communication -- all educated people speak English, there is an English-language press and broadcast media, and a unique English-language Indian literature has developed. But everybody speaks some other language at home. Doesn't matter. English as a second language is enough to provide national unity. Possibly the most useful legacy the British Empire has left that country is this language entirely foreign to Indian history and culture.

Indian English is a wonderful variant that has developed a life of its own. What is spoken as 'English' in India is very different from British English or American English. Why not? It was around before independence and has evolved since then.

Why are you such a fucking asshole? I never said banning other languages. To have one national language migrants would need to learn english, How many languages do we need to educate our kids, 5, 10, maybe one class spanish, another french, children in our schools should be taught in english. I couldn't speak english till I was seven but I learned it while keeping up my french. Having a national language promotes literacy, makes it easier to handle legal documents and provides a common dialect. Not having a legal national language in my opinion promotes more tribalism.

" languages don't have borders " what a dipshit statement!

They will. Their kids are going to grow up in an environment of English-language media. They'll learn English just like every previous wave of immigrants did.

Mostly. Lawrence Welk always talked like some kinda foreigner, but he wasn't -- he grew up in Strasburg, North Dakota -- a town where everybody spoke German; he learned English in school. But, that sort of anomaly was never any threat to national cultural unity.

Many companies in the UK are changing to UK based customer services units.

Which doesn't necessarily mean you won't get someone speaking Indian English. Or worse still? Geordie.

One of my brother's exchange schoolchildren was from Alsace. His French was almost unintelligible to most French-speaking people and his second language, compulsory at school, was German, but Alsatian German. He learned English from a grandmother who was from Paris, spoke 'proper' French and had learned English at school in the 1930s. He found that in Paris to make himself understood he should speak English...

Flashing on the scene in Austin Powers in Goldmember, where Austin and his Dad baffle their captors by speaking "English English." (I think what they were speaking was Cockney rhyming slang, but I'm not sure.)

Of course, AIUI, England is a country where you can find different dialects spoken from one village to the next, within the same county. Thank Og for BBC!

I read that Victor Davis "The Spics Are Coming" Hanson attributed "racialism" to somebody, and I had to spend the next several hours picking up pieces of my skull.

There is no "uncontrolled migration" — the population of the United States is currently increasing at the slowest rate it ever has — and there's no evidence immigrants are less adept at learning English than previously or less willing to do so. But carry on. In every sense of that term.

Almost all American schoolchildren are taught in English. The thing is, most if not all of the pushes we've had to declare English the official language would in fact ban other languages in some official capacities. Take, for example, the aftermath of a flood. FEMA arrives with water tanks, and a parent asks for a drink of water for hir children, in Spanish. Any American who watched Sesame Street as a kid knows the Spanish word for water, agua. But because they're not asking in English, the FEMA folks legally are not allowed to respond.

Now, exactly what skin off your nose is it if they do give that parent a bottle of agua?

There is a crisis at our southern border. There is an uncontrolled number of illegal migrants crossing our border. Controlled migration are visas, ellis island type entering legally.

Although that is true were not talking about population growth rate. Perhaps if we didn't kill so many by abortion we wouldn't have that problem now would we?

No one stated that, at least not me.

Language is very much a current issue, as we’re sourcing baby formula from foreign countries, new parents need to follow package instructions, and there’s little time to get packages relabeled.

There always have been lots of illegal migrants crossing that border, because it's the only land border on earth that separates an exceptionally rich country from an exceptionally poor one, and there's a spike every twenty years or so. Right now that's where we are, partially because covid slowed migration down like it slowed everything else and now things are picking up again. The only fundamental change is that Trump made it OK to openly hate immigrants of color for the first time in decades.

Although that is true were not talking about population growth rate. Perhaps if we didn't kill so many by abortion we wouldn't have that problem now would we?
I fail to see what a flood of unwanted babies would do to solve any problem whatsoever.
No one stated that, at least not me.
True, you didn't quite say it. But I'll ask again, exactly how does it hurt you that not everyone living in the USA speaks only English?

Migrants already learn English. They just prefer their native language because it's native. This isn't a new thing.

Second generation migrants have English as their primary or secondary language and typically speak English outside the house.

Having a national language wouldn't change a damn thing except your feelings.

Almost all American schoolchildren are taught in English.
I'm not disputing that but migrant children are overwhelming our schools with language barriers.
The thing is, most if not all of the pushes we've had to declare English the official language would in fact ban other languages in some official capacities.
HR 997 does not ban any language.

The fact that there are over 300 different languages used in the US having a national language, a common dialect to use at a naturalization site makes sense. Hard to do when millions are crossing our border illegally, where over half released into the country waiting up to 5 years before appearing before an immigration court does puts a strain on the local economies and schools.

A child having to go without water. I don't believe that for a minute. FEMA officials legally not authorized to respond to a person's need, total bullshit. Cite that!

No more so than any previous waves of immigrants. We can handle it.

We tend to forget about those previous waves, because America had such a strict immigration policy from the 1920s through the 1960s. But nothing is being said against Latinos today, that was not said against the Irish, the Germans, the Italians, the Poles, or the Chinese in the 19th Century. The Irish were innately stupid and violent and alcoholic, and their women were whores (which they were -- a product of the Irish migration wave, spurred by the potato famine, being a matter of atomized individuals without family support networks). The Germans were alcoholic. The Italians were natural criminals. The Irish, the (Catholic) Germans and the Italians were part of a Vatican plot to Catholicize a Protestant country -- the period equivalent of "replacement theory." The Chinese were just too different, too alien, to assimilate to American society, and threatened to overwhelm it by sheer numbers if not contained to China (much like what is said about Muslims today). The Poles were stupid (an attitude rooted in the Germans having got here first -- Germans have always looked down on Poles).

And let's not get started on those dumbass Midwestern Scandahoovians.

In all cases, the language barrier was overcome, the cultural barriers were managed, and the immigrants' kids grew up as American as any Social Register WASP.

Have no problem with legal migration, you do, too bad. We the people have a right to demand that our government uphold our immigration laws. We are spending billions of taxpayer dollars on illegal migrants, puting unreasonable strain on many local communities. We have enough unsolved problems in our own right and we're in debt up up our eyeballs. We are not obligated to take on millions of migrants. This will be an issue come election time. We the people have the right to determine who enters our country and to select those who are self sufficient and add to our common good of our nation. We have hundreds of thousands of homeless in our own right we don't need more. The majority of americans are against this onslaught of illegals. Americans know they're looking it's nothing against them but they are breaking our laws

Give it a fucking rest! They came through the front door. When I was young we made fun of polish people, today if you did that the racist virtue police would cancel you. LMFAO

If you mean they entered legally, of course they did, because the U.S. never had any immigration laws of any kind prior to the Chinese Exclusion Act. It is not fair to compare that situation with the present.

The front door was wide open.
