Story Rejection - Politics - just a heads up, not a bitch

When you resubmit the story, please remember that the plural of Somali is Somalis, not Somali's. The apostrophe is for possessive only, not the plural form.

If it were me, I'd get rid of some of the other stuff, too, but it's your story.
Actually the whole scene is going i think it didnt add anything to the story except to show she was a hardass.

But i dont think that was what got complained about anyhow.

You can still include politics and religion in your stories. You just have to be inoffensive (nonjudgmental might be a better term) about them.

I include quite a bit of religion in some of my tales, though I don't recall all that much political content. Some of that religious content is mildly satirical, but I hope it would take a VERY thin-skinned person to be offended by it.

So, you can't have offensive or extreme political views in stories, but my feed is absolutely polluted with insane, extreme garbage in the dedicated politics forum? I search by hitting "new posts," and the posts that come up in the political forum are ridiculous.

This place is fucking weird.

The story side, the forum side, and (I understand) the chat side are three very separate and distinct fiefdoms here.

The Princess of gratuitous violence and mayhem. She's never made a secret of her social and political views, and some people might find them extreme.
Extreme right. But she manages to be lovable anyway.

The scene also shows us that Hayley is racist enough to make H. P. Lovecraft blush, but I don't know if that's important to the series as a whole.

It IS weird, but remember that Laurel and Manu have been doing this for about 25 years, and they probably know their consumer base better than anyone. Logic and reason have nothing to do with it. The rules have adapted to what the readership seems to want. Author preferences are way, way down the list of importance.

To me, personally, the rule against religious and political stories seems weird and overdone, because it runs counter to the idea of free expression, and there's nothing intrinsically objectionable about these stories, unlike, say pedophilia and snuff. But the Site seems to feel it's taken the temperature of its readers on the issue and it believes this is what they want.

IMO you have to know where to draw the line and keep it vague. Make your religious character willing to drop that schtick if the reader wants it. Sex fantasy stories are ultimately supposed to be about the fantasy. If it’s about the submission to politics and religion, you have a problem. If it’s about Cory Booker and Nancy Mace yelling at each other politically, meanwhile enjoying a secret relationship that transcends politics where politics are not even mentioned, then going back to yelling at each other in public… I’d be interested in such a story but I don’t think I could submit it here. The story is also weakened if Cory gives in to Nancy at any point or vice versa. Keep them equals if possible, at all times. Such a challenging situation is too much for me. Probably for Laurel as well.

I think many people do find that mixing politics and religion with their smut is inherently offensive. I find that to be true for myself, at any rate, and get more than enough moralizing and hand-wringing laments from following current events.
But I think the real reason people want to avoid politics in their porn is so they don't have to face the reality of just how many secret kinks they have in common with 'the other side.'

The major reason that a writer wouldn't go heavy on partisanship in including politics and religion in their story is that they would lose half of their possible readership right off the top.

Probably more than half. Almost all of the opposite partisans, say 35-40% in the States, plus a healthy chunk of the 20 to 30% who despise both sides.

I don't really want to read about politics in sex stories, even the side I'm on. And potshots at the other side just make the author look petty.

Meh. I heartily detest both sides, but if the writing is good and the characters are interesting? I'm happy with the story. I don't really care whether those characters are all that political. I'm looking for verisimilitude, and in real life people talk about politics. I'm not going to be bothered if characters do the same.
