More realistic women?

Question about Ripley: If Ripley had been cast as a dude, would he have gone looking for Jones the cat? I'm thinking Ripley as a dude would have said, "I'm not risking my ass for a cat."

Edit/update: Nope. My guess was wrong. I just checked the original screenplay, called Starbeast, and the Ripley character, called Roby in that draft, and a man, does indeed save the cat.

That's a literal application of the "save the cat" principle for screenwriting.

It's okay, Simon. Men can like cats, too ;).

I currently have two cats, and have only ever lived five years of my life without at least one cat.

Five years?! I've never managed more than two.

And yes, I'd go back for the cat. It's one reason I don't volunteer at the local animal shelter: I'd bring them all home.

I like cats. Other people's cats. I just don't want to own one anymore. I will never abide the smell of catbox for the rest of my life. Had enough of that.

It's one thing to like cats, but it's another to go out of one's way to save a cat on a ship that's about to self-destruct while a killer xenomorph is stalking the ship looking to eat you.

I'd probably be like, "Good kitty. Go find and distract the xenomorph. I've got an escape ship to deal with."

I guess I should write my own screenwriting book, "Don't Save The Cat."

Look, sometimes I'm reading along and I hit something that makes me stop, roll my eyes, and say, "Clearly, a man wrote this." Sometimes its's a weird way of describing a common women's lived experience. Sometimes is the sense that I'm watching the story through The Male Gaze. To be honest, I don't really know how accurate my man-detector is. It feels accurate. But, of course it does.

The point I want to make, though, is that it's the narration that reads "man" to me. Rarely the characters. When a female character does something unexpected in a story I don't think, "oh, a woman wouldn't walk home alone." What I instead think is, "oh, she's the kind of person who isn't afraid to walk home alone."

The observations in this thread that women and men think/act differently are correct... on average. But when writing a story with 5 characters in it, you are not writing the average women, you're writing a woman.

Hell, some women are Marines. I assure you I have less in common with any of them than I do with my coworker sitting in the cube across from me--even though he has something different between his legs.

This is a good point. I'm trying to write a romance with a female narrator who keeps most of her thoughts to herself. Not just sex scenes but a real story with characters who struggle, suffer, and grow. (This is not what I've written in the past LOL.)

I do observe what women in my own life do and say but I'm less confident that I can figure out what they're thinking and feeling. The characters in my story are not much like the people around me, so the research and imaginative effort is daunting! I've done a lot of online reading but I thought that literotica readers and writers might have interesting and even unique insights that could help me.

I have a whole event dedicated for writing more women centric erotica, Pink Orchid. The list of this year’s entries comes out on Friday, I’ll link it on the event thread. So that’s one place to start. You could also consider participating next year.

Awesome! Thanks for letting me know!

Do you have any advice for a guy who'd like to realistically portray women (bearing in mind the diversity among women) dealing with desire, love, jealousy, uncertainty and mixed feelings, fear of vulnerability (emotional as well as physical), overcoming past bad experiences, toxic men vs weak men, men struggling to deal with their own issues, the imperfections of the men in their lives, feelings of being disrespected vs truly respected and cared for, happiness or unhappiness with power dynamics, wanting to feel pampered, wanting to be taken, just plain needing pay the bills or wanting more security and the attractions of luxury, dealing with men who lack confidence or have too much confidence, men who are too aggressive or aren't aggressive enough, desires for children, want to settle down vs just wanting to have fun vs I need this man tonight, etc....

“…(bearing in mind the diversity among women)…

That’s the key.

Who is your character? What is her background and what are her desires?

A young woman who is interested in having a traditional family is going to have different criteria for who they want as a partner. While a man can physiologically go knock up a near infinite number of partners, a woman who wants to procreate has more consequence and finality to her choices.

My wife was a strong and independent woman but she always wanted to be a stay at home mom. Many of the desires she had for a partner were not in line with a stereotypical American alpha male. We hung out for a while before she was attracted to me. I have a lot of femme attributes that she liked but she also had a chauvinistic desire to have a man who could provide for her.

She broke down emotionally for a bit when faced with new feelings of dependency when she got pregnant with our first son. Our situation and arrangement was unique to ourselves, so MMV.

A woman who isn’t interested in a family may have a very different set of criteria for who they are willing to hook up with.

The society and family someone is raised in can be a very different experience for men and women. Surly you either have siblings or have other experiences in the expectations a family can have on different family members. Imagine how different bringing home a potential partner could be for a girl who has a protective religious father vs. what your parents may have thought of your girlfriends? Even if they aren’t ’bringing them home’ there is a different psychological background in how she was likely raised.

When you consider the character background you might be able to anticipate how her responses could be different than your own based on the different influences and expectations she was raised with.

I’ve been partners with former foster kids and with Jewish princesses. They are each unique people. Who are you interested in writing about?

Is that a sweater dress with sheer tulle sleeves and then thick knit cuffs? Where did you find this?

A few years back when I used to watch more porn, I found there was a sub genre of actual living, breathing women pretending to be sex dolls while fucked. What the hell is that about?
There's a sub genre of men being urethrally sounded by a woman's stiletto heels as she wears them. The first time I saw that all I could think was, egads, those are some big muscles you're coupling to a very delicate part of your anatomy!

Anyway, no, I am zero percent surprised that there are women acting out a dollification fetish for fun and (probably) profit.

Sounding? My go to phrase is torn urethra. I have a lot of kinks, past and present, but there are limits. I know someone here who has done it. It’s a firm no for me.

Is there a Literotica-specific annex to Rule 41?

I mean, if I was to say something truly bizarre like a giant squid tentacle traversing the digestive tracts of two girls sequentially, would there already be a story?

Emily
You want odds on that? 🤣
