The Official Author's Hangout 2015 April Fool's Day Contest Support Thread

The idea hit me when they announced the new theme for this contest. I've been preparing ever since, pulling all-nighters several times a week but I believe I am ready. I have 33 different stories ready for submission, one in each category. I researched the all-time highest rated story in each for inspiration and copied, er wrote mine with just enough difference to declare mine as an original. I'm guaranteed to win.

April Fools, everybody!

Sounds like fun. Go for it.

How do I register for this contest?

You don't register, you just submit. So to speak.

When you are ready to submit your story, you will put a line in the notes field, probably something like "2015 APRIL FOOL'S CONTEST." In a week or two I would expect Laurel will post the specific rules for this contest, including what that line should be.

I'll have to try that. Under an alt, of course -- don't want to sully my good name. Let's see, should it be Texopia?

This contest is reminding me more and more of the old cliche about 1% inspiration, 99% perspiration. I've got about 15 Word pages, most of which isn't going to make the finaly cut, but I've got to get it all on paper before the good stuff emerges. Most of my stories have a sort of critical-mass moment where I know they're going to fly and it gets a lot easier to write. I haven't hit that yet on this one!

I have three in the works, one very heavily April Fools themed, the other two with just the "trick" element so far.

Based on a challenge issued late in the Valentines contest, one is definitely out of my usual comfort zone:

Sr71plt:
I'm game. How does an April Fools contest one with the keywords "bisexual, gay male, lesbian, transvestite, straight sex, voyeur, romance, and interracial" grab you?'

SR already had one with those keywords at the editor when he made the jesting challenge but I decided to go for it anyhow, adding my own addition that it could not be submitted in many category corresponding to on of those keywords.
Told in the first person of a Asian Transvestite named Paul. Hmm. I wonder what female name Paul might take on that would be appropriate for a contest entry...

Mine is going in Novels and Novellas (conveniently) as it will be eight Lit. pages. And speaking of mine, it just came back from the editor, so it's cleanup time on that.

I've been writing longer stories. I wanted to see if there's a difference in the readership, votes and hits, I decided not to write any more chapter stories since the Survivor contest is over.

I know most readers would rather read a whole story than a chapter story but how much is too much? How long of a story is too long to post on Literotica? Should we start posting 30,000 word stories, novella size? What about 60,000 word stories, novel length? I suspect the preferred length is 5 Literotica pages, 11,000 to 15,000 words.

I suspect whoever is intent on stealing stories from Literotica would be really happy that some of the writers here are writing stories that they can just copy, paste, and publish on Amazon as e-Books. I figure, if they steal my story, once they make the movie, I can swoop in and sue their ass by proving that the story is not only mine but stolen.

I had a creative writing professor who was asked by one of his students.

"How long should the story be?"

"As long as it takes to tell (show) the story."

Condensing a story that can be swallowed in one quick read, I suspect it would be better to write a complete 2,500 word story or less than a rambling 25,000 word story or more. I don't know. I'm still playing around with longer stories as my personal research.

Good luck with your story SR. May you finally win a contest.

I love it.

First, after years of bashing and maligning the incest category and its readers you start flooding the category with stories.

Now after bitching incessantly about long stories having advantages and yapping about how the unsophisticated readership of lit rewards 'flabby writing' here you are posting an eight page stories.

Shows two things about you

1-you are so desperate these days for any form of recognition you will sell out anything you claim you believe to be the 'right way"

2-You're a goddamn hypocrite.

Novels and Novellas? A long story in a very sparingly read and voted category. Look at you going for a cheap formula win. If it was anyone else I'd say 'good for you catching on to what the site does reward' but since all you have done is snipe about others who do it, I default to you're a pathetic desperate hypocrite.

Guess a few dollars and a "tainted" (by all your former opinions) W means a whole lot to you. Odd for someone with so much 'real world' success, don't you think?

So much for you write what you want and who cares what people think.

My stories have averaged 5/6 pages for 4 years now and it still depends on the category. Incest will get a lot of reads as will mature and group. Fetish, BDSM not so much. So they still reflect the category.

As for how long people will read I entered a 22 page contest and the eventual winner of that one entered with 19.

My vote total was only around a 100 but it was EH so not a high voted category, but the winner Roz's Purely Sinful had close to five hundred votes total....but over 200 were swept away:rolleyes:

You put a lot of stuff in incest and mature if you go 6+ pages there I think you will see the same number of votes/views because you also have name recognition there to help.

Personally I am still holding out for a contest where everyone enters a romance story. Then we would actually get a level playing field.

Twenty-two pages? Wow!

Interesting about the romance. Only, I'd like to see a contest done with just incest stories. Why?

I've noticed the readership dropping. I think a contest with just incest stories is just what this site needs as a jumpstart. What do you think?

How much can you write about a mother/son, father/daughter, aunt/nephew, et al, but being that there are an endless number of stories to write, just pepper them with incest. Only, seemingly, incest stories aren't big contest winners around here, romance is. Maybe you're on to something with this romance thing.

Good luck with it. Only, romance isn't my thing. Romance died when I was sexually abused by 7 different men from the ages of 5 to 15 and physically abused by my ex. Ergo my reason for writing incest stories. Even after all of the therapy, I've had, here I am writing erotica on a porn board. Go figure.

They took the money out of survivors so now Freddie ain't interested anymore.

Even after winning the contest 3 times, finishing 2nd three times, and placing third once, even after winning $2,500 in prize money, what fool would write for less than one tenth of a penny?

I wrote in that contest to challenge myself by continuing to write in 30 of the 35 categories. It's not my fault nor my problem if others were as prolific as I was.

Except for the shit that I was forced to write to remain competitive in 2007 and 2008 because of PrincessAirHead and MungoPark writing 750 word stories, all of my stories were quality stories and the best stories that I could write at the time.

For someone who's never competed in the Survivor contest, you sure enjoy peeing on everyone else's parade. For someone who routinely wins theme contests, with at least 10 under your belt, kettle black about writing for prize money.

We are all here because we love to read and write. Don't bash me because I'm living my passion and doing what I love to do.

Just because you enjoy writing tens of thousands of nonsensical and idiotic posts on the forum board, you don't hear me voicing my disapproval with you. You do your thing and I'll do mine. Okay?

Now nod your head so that I know you understand. You are from Texas after all (lol).

Sorry Freddie. I didn't bash you. I just stated a fact and it was addressed to someone else. How you take it is not my problem. You still need to work on your anger management.

Lit. is having an effect on my short story writing too. Mine are going longer now too. Everything I've written recently has gone at least 8,000 words. Before coming to Lit., years of mainstream competition had kept me to no more than 3,500 words, one Lit. page. Over the years at Lit., my wordage per story has gone up. I'm not purposely doing anything either to keep it down or push it up, though. I'm just still writing what I want to put in a story. Without the rigid mainstream limits, though, it seems to naturally be going longer. I still am writing a couple of stories a week, though, regardless of the wordage.

I'm trending the opposite way. The bulk of my work in recent years has gone down from about 16-20k words per story down to around 6k.

Lots of longer stuff in plans and progress, but they get overrun by my quickies nowadays. The 50k word one I'm trying to bring to a close right now is going on two years in progress since I wrote the first word. I think Lowborn took 3 years to finally get released.

Thrice already this year I've sent a story off to the editor (who also is one of my publishers) and he's said it was long enough to be an e-book, so my e-book backlog is beginning to grow almost as long as my completed stories backlog is.

For the life of me I can't even come up with an idea on a story for April Fools day. I just can't find the sexy in it.

I am eagerly awaiting reading the entries to see where you guys went with the theme.

The pushed back date on this one makes it unlikely that I'll even think about writing anything. With Earth Day, the end of the submission period always coincided with my April vacation, giving me a week of maximum quiet time while the young one was off at school to finish a story.

And I still failed three years in a row :p
