Has anyone else discovered this beauty, or am I alone in enjoying the talk feature built into this baby. I never hear of anyone saying I'll talk to you on yahoo, yet with a head set it would be free. After all you would pay for your broadband anyway, and yahoo is free to download.

I just wondered why no one seems to use it, or perhaps they do and I just don't know they do. lol

Oh they use it alright. I have several friends that I actually talk to through Yahoo. It's saved me a bundle in calls to Italy where my little sister and her family are stationed. It's really great since we both have webcams with microphones built in. We get to see and hear one another and it's been great to watch her kids grow over the last three years.

Actually there is only one person I talk to occassionally, but it's just as good as using the phone. I knew I couldn't be the only one who used it. That one person is in America though, so without Yahoo I'd never get to talk to her. She likes to hear my voice apparently. lol

I think that would be important as well, having broadband I mean. I doubt a phone line would be able to handle an image and a voice at the same time. You really should treat yourself though Ogg, to broadband I mean. It's far better than dial up and you never get cut off.

I have used MSN and ICQ, but haven't tried Yahoo yet, is it the preferred weapon of choice for that kind of thing? Y'all seem to use it.

Yes, Liar, I have used all three a lot and I have found Yahoo to be by far the best. The interface is cool and the cam images are awesome. The voice feature is really easy to use, too.

Oh yeah, we usually use MSN for that... hmmm...

I agree with everything said above, however for cam use I've found MSN to be much faster. It's as close to real time I've ever seen on one of the free IM programs. But I still use Yahoo for ease and because more people have it than MSN.

Which is really weird, since only a select few of the people I know use anything other than ICQ.. I think it might be because they all got on the IM train very early, when that was the only decent program out there.

Gonna check out Yahoo then...

Yeah, I met most of my online friends through ICQ, way back. But, over time, we've all graduated over to Yahoo.

To be honest, I had never heard of ICQ until you and the lovely Ms. Hynde. It's not nearly as common here, but maybe because the other three biggees are so well advertised and pushed. Plus, ISP's over here are pretty mainstream and the big 3 were the first to put out free messengers so that everyone could use them. ICQ is independant, no?

Plus, their emotes suck and there's no direct enter to send option. Control Enter hurts my pinky. *pout*

My sister used to use my microphone when talking with her friend from Scotland. I have never really used the feature on MSN at all.

ICQ was created by an Israeli company named Mirabilis which sold either their entire company or perhaps only the ICQ program to AOL a few years ago. I imagine it was to diminish competition for AOL's own IM program AIM.

ICQ was the first IM program I used --- I've only been online for about 10 years so I missed IRC. I never would have picked up anything else except that AIM spread through the world like head-lice and all of the people who hitched that train to the internet were using AIM. I still don't know that many people who use Yahoo, but I have all three programs and the option to use IRC through a nifty little combinant application called Trillian --- I open one window and all of my contacts from all of my various IM programs are listed there and I use the Trillian interface to converse with them.

The only voice-chat program I've ever used was Yahoo and it seemed quite easy. I've no idea if I can use the voice-chat feature through Trillian but it's a moot point since I'm currently only online at work and have no mic and headset.

Getting to the point, however, that I'm antsy to get back online at home for that sole reason --- the ability to converse freely with folks online without worrying about being interrupted by co-workers.

I used to be a big advocate of ICQ, but of course yahoo, AIM and MSN all had the power of their brand names behind them, plus the millions of subscribers to each service that didn't really know any better, and so ICQ has fallen off the top of the pile.

Back when I used it, I always hit 'tab' then 'enter' ...

I first started using AIM because my Everquest (An online game) buddies all used it to stay in touch. Whisp talked me into using yahoo by dangling the carrot of live cam interaction in front of me

I used to use Trillian for all my IM services, but Trillian can't handle the cam features of yahoo, so now I just have all the separate applications open.

Oh, I dunno, IRC may have been big back then because it was the only thing available, but believe me, it's still going strong today, although one of it's major uses today is for illegal file-sharing

First real-time chat system I ever used was something known as 'talkers', about 12 years ago. I think some of them still exist, but they're secluded little communities these days.

I was reading an article in a magazine the other day where they were bench testing all the various instant messengers and guess which one came out on top. Yahoo. They gave it 9 out 10 but for very specific reasons.

1/ This was there favourite reason, it's got its own pop up blocker built in.

2/ Another thing they liked was its ease of use and down right friendabilty (is that a word) lol I suppose the correct phrase would be user friendly.

3/ Of course the fact that it's free helps. lol

4/ But one thing they do love about Yahoo, is they're always ahead of the game.

5/ And talking about games, it's got them too.

It's funny what Lucky said was true, they rated the MSN cam higher than Yahoo's, but I see no difference.

Whisp and I had all kinds of trouble getting the cam feature to work on MSN. I think it objected to mine, more than hers. Maybe it was just a misconfiguration somewhere *shrug*

I meant to ask this in my last post, but does anyone know if its possible to talk with more than one person at once. I know you can group talk with the text messenger, but can you talk with it as well.

Because that would be cool, having a chat with four or five people while surfing the board. lol
