Yahoo Messenger

Back when I used it, I always hit 'tab' then 'enter' ...

I first started using AIM because my Everquest (An online game) buddies all used it to stay in touch. Whisp talked me into using yahoo by dangling the carrot of live cam interaction in front of me

I used to use Trillian for all my IM services, but Trillian can't handle the cam features of yahoo, so now I just have all the separate applications open.

I've been using 'Ctrl' + 'Enter' but it sucks. :( And ICQ doesn't have any good emotes! Have you seen the one they use for this :D ? YIKES!

Anyway, I used to use only AIM but then got Yahoo. I now use MSN and Yahoo pretty exclusively. AOL when I'm sending Mindy music and whatnot, but otherwise I am not a fan of AIM. Yahoo's probably the most well rounded and widely used, but MSN is a close second on features especially since they put out the 'Plus!' upgrade package. It's now got sound emotes and all kinds of other cool shit.

I love Yahoo for webcam and voice, though. Been good fun so far.

Another thing Yahoo's got going for it is downloadable dirty emoticons, the only snag with this is that the person your flashing your ass at has to have downloaded it as well otherwise they don't see the funny ones.

There's one that always makes me laugh, a pic of a female suddenly flashing her tits. You have to see this to understand how funny it is. It looks like just an ordinary smilie face and then pop they're dangling. lol

It's funny what Lucky said was true, they rated the MSN cam higher than Yahoo's, but I see no difference.

Carl

OF COURSE, what Lucky said was true!

I just found that MSN was able to get the most out of my webcam. There was a long install/setup process (very different from yahoo's more plug-n-play feel) but once I got all of the options chosen correctly, it's fantastic. It's pretty much real time, doesn't have those damn ads flashing beneath the picture window like yahoo and there are none of those weird 'frozen' moments where you just happened to be scratching your cheek and look like a total dwebe! I really like MSN better for the cam but I've never gotten the voice to work with it at the same time. Of course, I've never really spent much time trying, either.

It takes a lot of getting used to...talking to a computer screen. Especially when the recipient doesn't have a cam or a mic. You feel pretty damn silly...but it's fun.

Alas, you can't, which is why I dropped Trillian.
Never liked Trillian. Using Miranda IM at work, where I can't do anything but send text anyway. Small, simple and fast as f**k.

IRC is still alive and kicking, yes. But it IS different from IM chatting, can't really compare them. It's a meeting place, and not a personal list thing. More like here, only faster. Used to hang around on some channels earlier, but I ended up just lurking, since I couldn't keep up with that bloody tempo.

Oh, I remember the bad (good?) old days of BBS's. It must have been about 15 years ago, before the days of the internet, we used to go onto these things and chat in "real" time with people all over the world. It was like glorified CB, and it was an awesome rush the first few times. Damn difficult to get connected to and stay connected to, though!

Plus, their emotes suck and there's no direct enter to send option. Control Enter hurts my pinky. :( *pout*

Coming in late to say: Yes there is. I hit nothing but Enter.

But I souldn't say that. You're so cute when you pout.

I meant to ask this in my last post, but does anyone know if its possible to talk with more than one person at once. I know you can group talk with the text messenger, but can you talk with it as well.

Because that would be cool, having a chat with four or five people while surfing the board. lol

Carl

We usually hold conferences in AIM or MSN. IRC is probably still the winner in this area as many websites have their own chatroom to discuss projects and whatnot. Though, I am not a fan of IRC and so I stick to MSN or AIM for said conferences unless there is a jIRC client that I can use, like that on OC Remix.

Edit:

Oh and there is SoulSeek which you can use the chatrooms to discuss things, though mostly music.

Ah yes, the good old days... BBSes, ANSI sigs, astronomical phonebills, Fidonet.

Jesus, I'm so geeky...

You can sign me up to that list. I once had a nice sideline in designing ASCII-art sigs for my friends..

Aaah, geek nostalgia...

I'm late too but I have tried them all and I like Yahoo best. I have quite a few friends I talk to there.

I guess they should have moved with the times - When it first came out, graphical emoticons were way new and not many people used them. I used to hate them, actually, before I got over my 'oldskool' prejudices.

Still, what with text chatting using fonts other than courier, it does take the fun out of ASCII-art...

By the way, say hi to howie da chicken:

(If you don't have courier, it probably won't look right)

Nopes. When I run the real ICQ app too. Can't say what I'm doing different though. It has always worked like that for me. The last few years at least...

Weird.

:)

Howie used to belong to a good friend of mine, but she leant him to me for safekeeping some years back. I've tried to treat him with courtesy and respect since then.

He is cute, though, isn't it?

Aah, the things we did when we didn't have graphics to play with.

DikuMUD, anyone?

Raphy,

Yeah, I know I could have picked up IRC but I missed the wave. I was nowhere near as geeky then as I am now.

Also, ICQ stopped evolving because AOL bought it. To the best of my knowledge they haven't upgraded it or made any changes since Mirabilis turned it over to them. Why would they? They want people using AIM.

Trillian would bug me if I had much choice about it. Unfortunately I use IM for my work and with scattered webmasters using various and sundry different programs I don't have the space or the patience to leave five separate messaging applications on all the time. In that respect Trillian has been great for me, but I'm kind of a bare-bones kind of person with these programs. I find a skin that works for me, set my preferences and then I don't mess with it until I have to upgrade.

This point is exactly why I prefer Yahoo, they do keep on top of todays demands and have up graded their messenger several times.

Carl

I can't help wondering though, why they don't shout about the ability to chat with people using a mike. I mean what a good selling point it would be for a start. Perhaps they have stakes in the phone companies and would be hurting themselves by giving it away.
