I use Trillian basically all the time, when I'm online, because it lets me login to Yahoo, MSNM, ICQ and AIM at the same time in a single very compact and well organised list. The down side of Trillian, though, is very few of the higher features work properly, so I also have Yahoo, MSNM and ICQ installed. Each has its advantages.
ICQ is by far the best to handle large file transfers.
Yahoo has a cool interface and let's you bold and italicise fragments of your text, your messages can be longer than in MSN, and it lets you chat even when you're 'invisible'. It also has the best emotes, but with some limitations.
MSNM is slightly less functional than Yahoo, but has better image&sound, the file transfer interface works better than Yahoo's, has avatars of about the same size as Lit, and lets you add as many new emotes as you want (yes, including dirty ones, and the person you're sending them to doesn't have to do anything to see them)
Both Yahoo and MSN allow for conferencing with multiple users.
