Writer's Challenge: Magic In America

Shit...

The story's there, I just don't know what I'm trying to say with it.

Not giving up though...

I know how you feel. The story is there, I just have to type the fucking words.

Agreed, though the idea that I need to hold those words together is still hiding out on me.

And I said March 1st was generous.

I'm about halfway through my story...the rest is in my head, just has to make the transition down to the keyboard.

Sweet...don't we have to be assigned chapter numbers if it's done as a chain? All of the other chains do, IIRC.

Let me know, mine will be finished fairly soon. Have you been in touch with Laurel?

Thanks for the push- I was too ashamed to reply 'no, I still haven't contacted her,' so I went off to send her an IM instead- and she has replied already as well! Isn't that fantastic.

Everything is in order, once the deadline arrives we can make a schedule for posting order. (Laurel said this was fine to do)

Also, Snippetsville was named by Issue instead of Chapter, and Lord of the Rings had individual names instead of Chapters- Which is what I'd like to do with ours. I don't see this as being Chapter driven in the least, so I think our own individual titles would be best. (If you don't have a title and can't think of one, naming the location would work also)

Does that work for everyone? And do you guys think individual titles are fine or that we should follow something more formatted, such as all posting by story location. (I prefer to keep it open, just thought I'd ask for oppinions)

Laurel says to remember to put "PART OF THE MAGIC IN AMERICA CHAIN STORY" in the notes feild, when we make our submissions.

I just thought I'd post that here, before I have a chance to forget.

I think something like Magic in America - (individual title) would work great.

As far as the schedule goes, I can be as close to the front as you'd like me to be. I'll probably be done with mine in the next week or ten days.

If you need any help getting this thing organized, and off the ground, let me know. I've got plenty of time.

1. I agree.

2. I think you're story would be a great one to kick the whole thing off. (Not having read it, admitedly I am making a somewhat race bases assumption. Please forgive. )

3. I can't think of anything just yet, but I might just be overlooking. Thanks for the offer, and I will hopefully remember it when the time comes. Yes, I will be putting you to work in my salt mines soon, lol. But not to worry, you will be well compensated. Which is to say, you will have no compensation whatsoever except my gratitude.;)

ps- what (briefly) is your story about? (post or pm, whatever suits your fancy)

My horiscope for the day:

Sweet,
As if things haven't been complicated enough, a whole dimension of depth and intrigue can open now. The circumstances can put you in touch with spiritual realms that can add meaning to your life and give you perspective on things you may never fully understand. Allow yourself to sink beneath the surface in order to connect with your higher purpose.

intersting, no?

I'm glad I'm not writing for this one. I have no ideas whatsoever.

I know, it's been rather difficult. I have an idea, but it's still partilly formed. something abouy dreams, artifacts and lost nations. It's almost Arthurian, in certain respects. but it keeps the spirit of the competition, I believe.

I like your new av. (the boat in the water) peaceful. nice.

Because of the nature of this chain story, and how it is different from most other chains, I would like to make the first submission, and have it be an introduction- to the series and, briefly, to the first wave of stories included. Therefore, when your story is completed, please pm or email me snpetite@yahoo.com with an excerpt (and the whole thing if you wish) and a brief description. The reason for this is that I would like to very clearly signal to the reader (as well as potential writers) that the stories are varied expresssions of Magic in America, so that 1) they will know what to expect and 2) they will be encouraged to give the series a chance if the first story they read doesn't resonate with them for whatever reason. Unlike most chain stories, you can't well judge this chain by any story preceeding it.

Does anyone have any objection to this idea? I won't do it if you hate it, but I think it will be beneficial to all writers involved. What do you think?

ps- I posted my email cuz my pm box is nearly always full. My email has plenty of room:)

I have no objection to it, if that's what you want to do, but I don't know that it's necessary.....maybe we could come up with just a short author's note to go at the beginning of each story, sort of like we did with the Rainy Day Challenge, with a link back to the thread that started it?

The one nice thing about doing it that way is that they can see the authors that are participating, and may recognize a favorite, or become interested enough from the discussion that started it all. If you like, I could come up with something fairly quickly.

Just a thought.

check in time.

I'm making the dreaded chart. So I'm asking that everone give a little check in (on the thread is fine, since it's been mostly dead anyway- I can't garantee there's room in my PM box)

What i'd like to know is what you've got so far- as little or as much as that may be. by that I mean, are you in the idea stage, are you outlining (who does that?), are you in a draft, almost done, ect. Secondly- do you have a working title, or even a topic of some sort. (ie, mine so far is dreams, artifacts and lost nations. I'm in the research stages, and firming up my idea, hopefully into something resembling a plot.) If you'd like you can post a word count, or even an expected word count (but you don't have to). If you're work is complete- just post 'completed on: and then the date' and if you have a posting title, post that too. IF you expect to be completed by a certain date, you can post your estemate.

Ok, so those are the types of things I'm looking for.

Also post any questions you might have, any thing you want oppinions or advice on, and any suggestions for were you hope to be placed (if you have a preference)

illustrators please post if you have found an author to colaborate with, or if you are still searching for one. Authors who need illustators also be sure to let it be known. If you need help finding a match, let me know. If you prefer to do it yourself, this is as good as any to 'advertise'

My hand is tired from all this typing;)

please respond.

Re: check in time.

cloudy, I get the impression you and a few others are the only ones checking this thread:eek:

the others are hopefully lurking though, hope to hear from all soon.

I'll wait to comment on your last post in case anyone else wants to post a thought.

Sweet, mine should be done at least by the end of the week, if not sooner. You know what it's about, but still haven't settled on a title.

So far, I'm right at 1500 words, and maybe a third of the way through the story, so it'll wind up around 5,000 words, I'm guessing.

Put me in the line-up wherever you like, but it'll be ready to go at the end of the week.

let's see if I can do this...

I'm here. Have been, just didn't notice anyone posting on the thread. Must not have looked well enough, or maybe just wasn't on when the posts were made.
Anyway, I've only just started it, though I pretty much know what'll happen. The problem has been finding out what it means so I kow whether or not I've written something I can submit, or that was even worth writing, frankly.
Sorry, again, Cant. Don't worry. We've got a month yet.
Oh, and it's looking like this will be non-erotic. Doubt it'll get many views.
A question, though: IF we put Magic In America in the titles, will that cause any problems for those involved in other story contests/challenges who want to use the same story? Like was mentioned before?

I don't understand the question. Could you rephrase it?

PS- look for my pm.

The title field is quite short. There won't be much room in it for your individual title if you use it up with "Magic In America." Could you put it in the description field, or in a blurb at the head of the story or something? It seems to me people ought to be consistent.

In the Rainy Day challenge we all placed a note in italics at the beginning of the stories:
This story has been submitted as part of the RAINY DAY STORY CHALLENGE set on the Author Hangout Discussion Forum. All criteria and build up can be viewed through this link: RAINY DAY STORY CHALLENGE THREAD

The last bit was a link to the discussion thread. That was all we did.

If it's a Chain Story there are more rules. The title itself would be "Magic in America Ch. XX" for all the stories, they would be submitted to the Chain Stories section, and whatnot.

But I understand this is a Challenge, not a Chain. I think that's good, myself, because Chains are actually all one story, written collaboratively.

Quiet_Cool and the rest of you:
So far, it looks like Quiet_Cool is the only one who wants any sort of illo from me. His story isn't settled enough for him to ask for anything specific yet.

still available. If you want to submit with illos in the story, I should have a little time. Begin collaboration when you can see what you will want and there's enough information in the already written story to make my job possible. Okay?
