America lost to the Republic of Ireland in one of tonight's preparation games, 2-1.

I still think my £10 is a good outside bet for America to reach the quarter-finals...

In an embarrasingly honest question that shows how little we know about soccer in the US in general, are we that good?

Not one of the super teams no, but just to reach the World Cup finals in June means that you've already had to play (and score) against a number of opposing sides.

America usually gets to the finals but don't make it beyond the initial matches.

But this time I have a feeling...

:D

You're being too kind us. If we (the US) make it to the June rounds, we'll be very lucky.

Will anyone knock off France this year? And don't say England. You know in your heart that won't happen.

Maybe one day America will get so good at girl's football (soccer) that they'll have to change the rules like they did in the Ryder Cup.

no offense but i dont think US will do very well ... i watched the game tonight i think ireland could progress pass the group stages

i think england will be in with a chance too get to the final especially with how we played tonight even without beckham :)

if england manage to qualify from the group of death along with the favourites argentina then they should make the semis again at least
4-0 win against paraguay without beckham bodes well for the finals

sorry guys but the usa wont make it past the group stages , pp man send me the tenner now

The US is a lot better than it was four years ago, but I can't see them getting out of the group stages. Portugal is the class of the group, South Korea is the home side, Poland is, uh, Poland. Who is going to score the goals for us? That's what concerns me. Goals.

I think England will be a big favorite for the Cup four years from now. Owen, Beckham, Gerrard, all those guys will be in their prime. And they have lots of other good young guys coming up. But I think they'll surprise this go-around as well. They need to somehow finish top of their group, or hope that France stumbles, so that England doesn't play France in the first knock-out game. If you want to win the whole thing you don't want to play the best team in the world to start off.

I'm gonna be out of town when the Cup starts. But since all the games will be on ESPN, ESPN2, and ABC, I'll be in my hotel room or the bar, drinking and waiting for some unknown to score a goal and become the most popular person in his country.

Prat.

I just saw the America vs Irish Republic game today...

on Eurosport. I didn't have a chance yesterday and only saw the score.

I am well pleased with my outside bet. America were equal 1-1 until 11 minutes before the final whistle.

They are slowly going from strength to strength. Hopefully they'll peak just at the right time...

:D

You know you're dribbling in your pants now that you've got real football to watch, p_p_.

What's the betting you'll be watching it on TV with the rest of us screaming like a lot of hysterical banshees each time America scores a goal.

Unless it's against England of course...

Then you'll have to do without my support...

:D

I only watch CSPAN and the NFL on TV these days

Someone is going to have to shoot me in the ass with a cattle prod.

I have the oddest desire to lock you up in some cheesy motel room to see how long it would take me to change your politics.

I have always had a great love for cheese...

:p

A Packers fan! Well now that explains the whole lock you up in a motel and turn you into a quivering blob of worn out and newly Americanized manflesh thing.

You're my new best good psychobuddy. :D
