"marriage" died when we started allowing people to marry for love, rather than arranged marriages, and also died when women stopped being property, which basically is what 'traditional marriage' made women, property, with no rights.

As far as divorce goes, I think it is time we cut through the bullshit of the 50% divorce figure, it is bandied about as fact and from what I can tell, is outdated. Studies of marriage in recent years shows that the divorce rates topped out 30 years ago, and has been declining since, but we still hear of the 50% figure. I know a lot of people and among them, very few have been divorced, it is less then 10%. Among kids my S grew up with, very few have divorced parents. I realize that is talking from the perspective of someone living an upper middle income existence in the burbs, but from talking to other people their experience has been the same. There also have been big articles recently that among younger people, 35 and unders, there is a strong stigma about being divorced and it sounds like they aren't divorcing the way it once happened. Among other things, young people don't feel the pressure to get married and have kids in their 20's, and most of them are able to wait for the right person it seems, because they do wait, and if they don't, they don't marry, as opposed to my generation and older ones, where there was this incredible pressure to marry.

As far as "liberals' destroying marriage, I suggest you read a good social history of the US, like "The Glory and the Dream", to read about what the 1950's were like, with the nuclear family, the suburban miracle and so forth, to read about the dark side....the difference in the 'good old days' wasn't that marriage was better or sounder, but rather, that it was difficult to divorce, women had very little choice outside marriage, so basically, people stayed together in miserable marriages...and in the glory and the dream Manchester talks about 'mother's little helpers" , pills mothers were taking to feel better, it talks about things like infidelity and the like, and it wasn't Ozzie amd Harriet. Conservatives think Ozzie and Harriet was real, that this is really how things were back then, and it was hollywood bullshit, the only difference was, back then this stuff was hidden under a smokescreen of 'being normal'.......

I don't think straights will stop calling themselves married if gays marry, at least not most of them, maybe cracker scum from down in the bible belt or the Fred Phelps of the world, but most people seem to feel (and more will as time goes on) that allowing gays to marry doesn't change their marriage, I know it doesn't change mine, and I have been married a long time. When the Mass supreme court ruled in favor of same sex marriage, they polled people, and something like 75% of them said they were afraid it would hurt marriage, mostly because the jackasses in the Catholic church and evangelicals were braying that like retarded donkeys, now, 10 years after the fact, about 90% of people polled said they believed that allowing gays to marry did absolutely nothing to hurt their or any other marriage, and among the 10% who said they felt it did, they said it did because legalizing same sex marriage 'took the stigma away from being gay', 'gave it government approval'...so in other words, had nothing to do with hurting marriage and more about them being afraid that being anti gay would be as popular as being an open racist.
