Just after a post from Pear about Secret Spells Barbie, I thought I'd start my usual style of thread of asking people pointless questions.

Are there any Wiccas here? My new girlfriend (GBHLCS ) is Wiccan, although not aggressively so and I've found out a hell of a lot just through my curiousity. Are any of you practising Wiccans and how seriously do you take it? Do you get any shit from people because of it?

Curiously yours,

The Earl

I can't help you there. I am.....well....hm....I don't think there's a word for it. If there is, I'm pretty sure it's not Wiccan. ;) Although, I too would be curious to hear the replys.

Whisper :rose:

Editted because I need a spell checker. *sigh*

I only know one practicing Wiccan and she is as flakey as they come. She throughly believes in faeries, magic, good vibes, etc. While there are times I question if she has an active brain cell in her head, I have to admit she is generally one of the happiest most content people I know, even though she has less and faces a lot more hardship than most I know, so maybe there is something to it after all.

Can Wicca be considered a standalone religion? If so I have actually dated seven different brands of faith. Protestant, Russian Orthodox, Jewish, Atheist, Lamaist, Wiccan and Muslim. And I can say without any doubt that the Wiccan girl was the nuttiest. Lovely girl, but with a few marbles astray. If this had anything to do with her practices or not, I'll leave unsaid.

Dear Earl,
Since I don't know what a "Wicca" is, I guess I'm not one. I think I'd know if I was. I certainly hope so. Is that something that sneaks up on you without you realizing it?
MG
Ps. Yes, I know I've led a sheltered life.

I'd say that Wicca would be the closest to religion as I'd ever get. I'm not a practioning Wiccan, but I agree with a few of their believes. For example, I wouldn't go as far as to regard the sky, the earth, the wind, etc, as gods and goddesses, but I do believe that there's a special spirit within all these things, and I strive to be good to them, by caring about the environment, and so on.

There are so many different schools within Wicca, and they're rather different from each other; I can't say that I'm very close to either of them, but I sympathise with them for being close to nature and for not trying to force their religion upon others, as Christianity does.

I believe in magic, oh, yes, definitely! I've witnessed a few things being done, so I know that it exists, but I also know that you have to be much, much stronger than me to practise it, so I stay away from such things. The only magic I ever practise, is to keep my fingers crossed when a friend is trying to pass a test, or something like that. It doesn't sound very magical, but it is. To wish someone well - and mean it - and to hope that someone will do well, is a type of magic that anyone can do. It's a good vibes thing.

Does it work?

Well, it's pretty much the same thing as with praying. It doesn't hurt, it gives you hope and comfort, and IF things turn out the way you hoped, you will believe that it was because you kept your fingers crossed/prayed/gave a lucky charm to your friend/whatever.

I have a friend who is a Wiccan. She is a very strong and stable person. Flakey would not be a word that would come to mind to describe her.

BTW, I've got an avatar now, YAY! lol

MG: Wicca is a religion, although not a very common one. I think the main reason it's not that common is that Christians generally see Wiccans as devil worshippers and so used to burn them. Which is weird because Wicca has nothing to do with Christianity or the devil. Ho hum.

I've only met the one Wicca and she's just a normal person. She's not a happy-clappy, that's just what she believes in.

aren't they the ones that burned Edward Woodwardwardward alive?

Dear Earl,
It sounds sort of like the pantheism of the American Indians. Am I close?
MG

My boyfriend thinks that I'm wiccan, but since I'm ecclectic I can only claim to be pagan.

If you pray and believe that god will answer you are not crazy, but if you believe in magic you are. If you believe in angels (they are in the bible) your sane, but if you believe in fairies, your nuts.

Oh well. What care I for the approval of others? ON the other hand, to dance to the beat of your own drummer doesnt' neccesariy make one a fruit loop.

Marry Part- to all be they Christian, Pagan, Muslim, or worse yet, Conservative.

Love,

SweetNnon-conformist

Hopefully she will realize that I was being sarcastic:) and pointing out an obvious inconsistancy in the way many people think.

Cuz I wouldn't want to get on her bad side!

TheEarl,

How's it hanging in the wild, wild world of the uni? Glad to see you around.

That's about all I should add-however, back in college, when the blank that said, "Religion" had to be filled-out, I'd always write, "Reform Druid."

MG might be interested in Reform Druidism. As opposed to Orthodox, and Conservative Druids, those of us who practice Reform Druidity, worship bushes in addition to trees. That means our chief "devils" are the same ones all Druids, despise--life forms which despoil our sacred objects: loggers, woodpeckers, termites, and beavers. However, to that list of infamy we include that vilest of defilers, dogs.

Right Reverend Rumple

Dear Reverend Rumple,
Please send me informational brochures and enrollment forms.

I've know a number of people who idenfity themselves as wiccans and only 1 of them is what you might consider a fully functioning sucessful member of society.

I worked with a Wiccan for a while and he seemed perfectly normal to me. I only discovered his religion when he invited me to his wedding.

The wedding and associated festivities were interesting. Quicker than the Quakers, more smells than the Roman Catholics, more alcohol than the Jews, much jollier than most other weddings I've attended.

If a guy prays and believes that god will answer, well maybe he's not insane, but I do reserve the right to consider him quite full of himself.

I'm christian. I say the bible is full of fairy tales. It's written for a an audience that existed some thousand years ago. Those who believe is by the letter are IMO just as much out in the blue as those who put out snacks for the imps at night.

But is either insane? No. Merely misinformed. :)

Or maybe I am? Could be.

I know a pratt. Well, lots in fact, but this one in particular holds the key to the City of Idiocy. (Mike knows who I mean. ;))

He is a know-it-all, yep, he claims to know everything. Anyway, we were discussing religion the other day, and he stated that he "does not subscribe to the 'Christian' theory of evolution, he believes Darwin. Afterall if the Adam and Eve story was true we'd all have evolved from an incestuous relationship." Well, DUR!

I went on to explain that most people in our day and age 'subscribe' to the evoluntionary theory of our existence. There is too much evidence to the contrary for even the most avid of religious people to believe othwise. It is fact, it's not a matter of theology.

The Adam and Eve story, like most things in the bible, is purely a metaphor. The whole book of Genisis is not to be taken literally. It was just a simplified way of describing the all powerful being that God is. If you like, it's a condensed version of evolution, which in fact took place over 6 billion years, not 6 days. In the Adam and Eve story the snake represented evil, and the apple temptation. 'Pure' man and woman were led astray by the less beautiful side of human nature, and were banished to the wilderness, without the protection of God forever more. As I said, nearly everything in the bible is metaphorical, we have to look beyond the words to the hidden meaning.

Not that I'm that religious, or anything, I just did a lot of bible study when I was young. ;)
