Why aren't liberals happy?

No doubt you'd love this shit pile:

Nicki Minaj, “Stupid Hoe”

You a stupid hoe, you a, you a stupid hoe (x3)
You a stupid hoe, (yeah) you a, you a stupid hoe
You a stupid hoe, you a, you a stupid hoe (stupid, stupid)
You a stupid hoe, you a, you a stupid hoe (stupid, stupid)
You a stupid hoe, you a, you a stupid hoe (stupid, stupid)
(stupid, stupid)

Well, considering that you do need a little bit of cultural literacy to get the references to things like contemporary actors and their place in the class system, "I'm Angelina, you Jennifer
Come on b-tch, you see where Brad at" implying that you would lose your mate to her, or the variety of other nods to Micheal Jordan, Joe Palanzki, the platinum trade, etc.

I'm actually not a huge fan of that song, because it's just a long tribute to slut-shaming, but saying that it isn't a poem is a flat-out lie. It may not be a poem that you like, but it's still a poem, and it can still be broken down and critiqued.

[Verse 1: Thomas Edison]
Step up, you'll be shocked when I spit and start static
I'll rip your style and add it to my long list of patents
While you were busy digging ditches and burning bridges
I'm pumping out inventions, stacking riches, so go back to your pigeons
You're a geek, plagued by OCD
You never had sex, but you sure got screwed by me
I'll crush you Tesla, there's just no putting it gently
I don't alternate my flow, I diss you directly

[Verse 2: Nikola Tesla]
I see a universe of infinite energy
But no potential for threat from this enemy
So you can call me Tesla, Nikola, impeccably dressed
Giving lessons in electrical nemesis, this will be on the test
So confess to your thefts and let the whole world know
What the Serbian did for the Wizard of Menlo
History is getting rewritten and I have reddit
Your best invention was a way to steal credit

[Verse 3: Thomas Edison]
The truth hertz, you're broke and washed up
Don't give a smidgen 'bout your visions if they can't make a buck
I conduct business, understood things you never could
So dope that I even make New Jersey look good
I'm on the record I invented, you got duped, there, I said it
I'll bet you fifty thousand dollars that you'll never forget it
Without me, here's a taste of what this battle would be
No lights, no camera, no sound. See?

[Verse 4: Nikola Tesla]
You fool, you think that you can touch me with this?
You couldn't handle my gifts with your greedy little mind
What's inside mine was ahead of its own time
You did not steal from me, you stole me from mankind!
It's the wireless transmission of truth
And it's a shocking real story of a banker and you
And if the people knew you stopped me from making power free
They would curse the con Edison with every utility

My basic criterion is, it is music if you can enjoy it without knowing the language of the lyrics, if any.

How many people really enjoy rap in that sense, I wonder?

It's best that you understand first that hip-hop is culture and can also refer to form, whereas rap music is just one form of hip-hop. Now, many people can understand it on different levels. There is an evolving language going in rap that takes a dedicated ear to listen to it if you really want to get what's being said instead of just going with the flow of the beats or just superficially taking the lyrics at face value as is.

As with all music, there's crap and there's gold. There's classics that stay the test of time and there's disposable flash-in-the-pan pap. Same applies to rap.

The lyrics that Vetteman posted because he's pressed is the stuff that he believes comprises all of rap. Instead, he presents the limits of his knowledge of rap and signifies his complete limits of all he knows about "black music." What's truly ironic here is that, all of the forms of Black American Music that he's listed are forms of music created under liberalism. The very same liberalism that he loves to dump on.

Another ironic note here is that ALL forms of Black American Music — including the forms Vetteman enjoys — were considered trash, low-class, ghetto, etc., by white America until they realized they could co-opt it, assimilate it, re-purpose it and make money from it. Then they became legit on paper.

Rap is no different.

I bring that last point up because in the context of lyrics and writing, as with much of music with lyrics, there is a story being told in rap. Many stories, by many people. These stories can be heard in the lyrics. However, much of what you might hear in the mainstream, or better yet, what might be served up to you by those who have co-opted the form is not a story being told but the process of an ages-old machine that doesn't know or care from good or bad as long as it makes money.

I could go further and deeper, but this subject keeps popping up every so often and I get weary of it. There's so many variables, tangents and connections that comprises rap music...and as much as I love a Renny thread fail, this isn't the proper thread that deserves a breakdown discussion of the craft's verity.

Frankly, I've seen more merit inflate Zumi's diapers after reading one of my posts.:D

Scat fetish reference!

Well . . . the blues, at any rate, predates FDR, even predates TR.

Oh hell yeah. African roots never ever lost their power.

And there wouldn't be any American music industry (and a significant part of the national music culture) as we know it without the blues. In many ways both direct and indirect, you can thank the blues for the rap you hate. ;)

I despise almost all rap but not because of the music. It's because of the idiots who think we all want to listen to it so they turn their car and home stereos up to 11 so we can all rock out to the bass.
I want every person who has ever done that do die a horrible, slow, painful death that includes but is not limited to having flesh eating snails inserted into their urethra.

Also, that Rumor Has It song. I don't know who sings it or why it's popular but everyone responsible needs to be shot.

Car stereo's I get....esp the assholes who put loud speakers in their chassis to broadcast their music.

But home? Nahhhh.....if you have your own house turning it up to 11 is totally diff, it's really the only acceptable place to turn it up to 11....

I agree. But the cool thing is that you can counter this by cranking "Dancing Queen" by Abba out of your own car stereo.
